For regular verbs, add -ed to the root form of the verb (or just -d if the root form already ends in an e):

The past progressive tense is used to describe an ongoing activity in the past. For example:

John was baking a cake.

They were painting the fence.

Often, the past progressive tense is used to set the scene for another action. For example:

John was baking a cake when the storm started.

They were painting the fence while I was cutting the grass.

The past progressive tense is also known as the "past continuous tense" or the "past continuing tense".

Spelling Tip

Add ing to most verbs. Ex. play > playing, cry > crying, bark > barking

For verbs that end in e, remove the e and add ing. Ex: slide > sliding, ride > riding

For verbs that end in ie, change the ie to y and add ing. Ex: die > dying, tie > tying

For a verb whose last syllable is written with a consonant-vowel-consonant and is stressed, double the last letter before adding ing. Ex: beg > begging, begin > beginning. However: enter > entering (last syllable is not stressed)

Auxiliary

To form the past continuous the auxiliary verb "to be" and the verb + ing are used. The auxiliary verb "to be" is in the past simple, but note that "to be" is an irregular verb Questions in Past Continuous

Questions in Past Continous

To make questions in the Past Continuous, put ‘was’/’were‘ before the subject and add the ‘-ing’ form of the verb:

What were you doing when you broke your leg?

Yes/No questions
To create a question that will be answered with a ‘yes’ or ‘no’, use ‘was‘ / ‘were‘ (or ‘wasn’t‘ / ‘weren’t‘ for a negative question) + -ing verb.

Negative forms of Past Continuous

To make negative statements in the Past Continuous, we use:

was/were + not + the “-ing” form of the verb

Examples:

Peter wasn’t doing his homework when his father came in.

Rebecca was angry with her children because they weren’tsleeping when she arrived.
