Edwards says this to scare the people that if they don't follow the church, they will be damned to hell. He uses imagery to describe what hell is like. What he says shows the punishment they will receive if they do not follow God.

This quote illiterates how hell will be for them if they are not born again. It shows that they will be stuck there eternally and there will be no one to save them. He uses imagery to scare the people of what it is like.
