Some of the skills and approaches that the students will have to use are:

Collect evidence, by hearing the noise of the content of the boxes
Imagination to use the evidence to provide a solution/answer
Generate ideas/assumptions
Communication of their ideas and respect to others' ideas
Discussion and agreement to reach a conclusion of what is inside the box
Even disappointment, when their conclusions do not match the others and when they learn that they won't be able to know what is inside the boxes.

This experiment has reminded me a similar one that I usually do every year.
I asked my students to guess what a glass jar contains. At first the have no clues, but little by little, I let them hear, touch, see, smell and taste the jar with salty water in it.

It useful to think about how the nervous system works.

I've enjoyed the Mistery boxes activity because it let the students to think, discuss, imagine, predict, argue, create and contrast hypothesis,...

But I think that at the end, I would show them the contain of the boxes. Maybe, after 1 or 2 weeks.

We were introduced to this activity in "Space Awareness Summer School" in Marathon. I loved "Mystery boxes it was a fun activity were we had to use our imagination, and creativity. This activity is too funny for me too! It is also very useful: it requires to use imagination and creativity. It develops curiosity and social abilities because students have to work in groups and so they have to respect each other and share and compares their ideas. I've not encountered this activity before. I think it's brilliant. It really does encapsulate the scientific process very well. I liked the peer review process, something students should definitely be exposed to early in their careers and often. I liked that they did NOT find out what was actually in the boxes, as it helped to eliminate the "winners vs losers" aspect that often pervades many classroom activities. In this manner, everyone "wins", in that they have collectively advanced their reasoning abilities as a group. i was surprised that the teacher even did not know what was in the boxes. That's a good touch. No one involved had any more or less knowledge than the other. Definitely an activity I will look for ways to implement when I can.

My first theme in my sillabus is Scientific method. I'm sure I will use this activity in my class. Mystery boxes is a practical activity in which students experience how scientific processes occur for knowledge construction. Characteristics of nature of science is very well represented and performed by students; the tentative nature of knowledge, importance of observation , the role of imagination and creativity, integration of social and cultural aspects. Unless science process skills such as observing, inferring, communicating, classifying, predicting and collaboration are experienced in science classes we cannot expect students to learn those skills.

What a fantastic and pleasant way to introduce the scientific process to your students! In order to work out what is in each box the students will have to cooperate with each other through out the whole process. They have to make observations and hypotheses, use their creativity and imagination, share their ideas with each other, organize and write down their thoughts, discuss with their classmates and take a decision for their group, present and support their ideas to the whole class, listen to and accept different opinions. I did not know this activity. In my next class I will do with my students. Students raised hypotheses based on the observation that made using only the senses. They reached conclusions based on observations . They presented to a larger group their arguments . And the fact of not knowing what was inside it was great. Science is even this a mystery that makes scientists continue the asuas investigations. The scientific method taught in an incredibly simple way , great.

Very interesting. I think that making prediction and having a confrontation with the others are the most important skills students use in this activity. But I think that the biggest lesson they learn is to discover that sometimes you have to run the risk of working without finding an answer to your questions.

For me the most challenging aspect is not having control over an entire activity. Another issue is the time, an Inquiry Based Learning will require too much time.

The black box is really THE activity that allows students to get in position for research and reflection. Students are almost forced to listen to each other, to accept the arguments of others and if necessary to change their mind.
The key of this activity is in the boxes which have remained closed. If we open the boxes, we do not allow students to step into the shoes of a scientist.

I think it's amazing the trial to find out what are in the boxes without open them. So, children can develope skills and approaches as : communication, imagination, hypothesis, visualisation, creativity, observation, estimation. They also can understand as well that a scientinst sometimes can't find main results, but the research is quite worth, as Greek poet Kavafi's says other words.

I was lucky enough to experience it as a participant thanks to Eleftheria (I have to admit that the final part of not getting to know if your guesses were right or wrong is an awfully perfect lesson on the nature of science and research).
I have already tried it with the teachers in my school (yay!) and now it is high time mystery boxes cross my classroom door.. Fingers crossed, for my 9-year-olds are about to exercise observation, imagination, estimation, visualization, classification, hypothesis, communication, debate, argument, collaboration, critical thinking, problem solving, scientific approach and, last but not least... their patience when I take those boxes back!

If you manage to get a good group dynamic, like the one displayed in this video, we expect students to use the best of their argumentative /communication skills. If your students are to propose one hypothesis, they have to negotiate to reach the best idea. Latter, at the end of the activity, the best ideas must come out the the whole class discussion.
