Coniferous Forest

Definition: A coniferous forest is established as a forest that is comprised of evergreen conifers or cone-bearing trees. Being thought of as the largest land-based biome, It blankets more than 15% of Earth’s complete land area.

Favorite Animal: Wild Yak

Unique Adaptation: Heavy fur coats to keep them warm in a cold climate.

Favorite plant: Spruce

Unique Adaptation: Long needle like leaves to prevent drying out.

Invasive Species: Asian Long horned Beetle . Attacks 18 different species of trees-Causes cracks and holes in trees Weakens trees/disrupts sap flow

Chaparral Biome

a.) Dry densely compacted shrubs

b.) Average temperature range: 30° to 100° F (-1° to 38° C)

c.) Average annual precipitation: About 10-17 inches of rain per year (25-43 cm)

d.) Spotted Skunk: It's able to blend it with it's black and white spots

e.) Sticky monkey-flower: very adapted to heat, and insect repellent

The tentacles carry a sting cell that allows them to sting other species. Helps them against predators and helps them get food.

Roots to keep them in place

They have a network of roots to keep them in the ground. They provide protection from the waves and currents 

Definition: The intertidal zone is the area where the land meets the ocean, between low and high tide.

Favorite Animal: Starfish, their unique adaptation is rows of tube feet.

Favorite plant: Sea Lettuce, their unique adaptation is thin and flexible moving paperish structure

Definition: the tidal mouth of a large river, where the tide meets the stream

pH: 7.0 to 7.5 in fresher section → 8.0 to 8.6 in saline areas

Favorite Animal: River Otter

Unique Adaptation: They have webbed feet to swim faster and catch prey

Unique Adaptation: They have ultrafiltration in their roots to remove salt from the mixture of river and seawater

Invasive Species: Chinese Mitten Crabs

Definition: A treeless, cold region with low-growing vegetation and permanently frozen subsoil found in the Arctic and on top of mountains.

Average Temperature: -40°C - 18°C (-40°F - 64°F)

Average Precipitation: 15 to 25 centimeters (6 to 10 inches)

Favorite Animal: Arctic fox

Unique Adaptation: White fur to help them blend into their environment.

Favorite Plant: Arctic crocus

Unique Adaptation: Fuzzy leaves, buds, and stems help protect the plant from harsh winds.

Invasive Species: Red fox because it competes with the Arctic fox for food and resources.

Definition: Extremely dry environments that house well-adapted animals and plants

Definition: A large grassy plane

Favorite Animal: The hyena, which has a large heart for stronger endurance

Favorite Plant: The baobab tree, which has a shiny coat to reflect heat

Invasive species: Fire ants

Definition: Area of ocean outside of coastal areas

Zones: Epipelagic, Mesopelagic, Bathypelagic, Abyssopelagic, Hadopelagic

Animal Adaptation: Cuddle Fish uses camouflage to hide from predators

Plat Adaptation: Red algae have grown calcium carbonate in their cell walls

This makes the algae resistant to currents so they don’t get blown over

Invasive species: Lion fish

Definition: fissures on the seabed from which geothermally heated water discharges. 

pH: ranging from 2-5

Zone: Hadopelagic Zone

Animal Adaptation: Scaly-foot gastropods, they have bacteria living in them that convert the chemicals from the vents to food.

Plant Adaptation:

Due to the extreme environment of the deep sea hydrothermal vents “normal” plants cannot live there

• Instead there are bacteria called Chemosynthetic Bacteria, these bacteria are the producers of the deep sea vent ecosystem and use chemosynthesis to produce energy from the chemicals.

Invasive Species: The Deep Sea Hydrothermal Vents are listed to be free of invasive species.

This is due to the extreme climate, no introduced species can survive.

Definition: A large area with many types of coral, fish, and plant life. Coral Reefs form due to coral larvae attaching to the underwater edges of continents or islands.

pH: 8-8.4

Zones: The reef flat, reef crust, and fore reef or reef front form the major zones in common reefs.

Favorite Animal: Sea Horses. These creatures have adapted to using camouflage, which can help prevent them from being attacked by predators.

Favorite Plant: Red Algae, this species has a phycoerythrin pigment in it. This helps them trap in sunlight to survive at lower depths.

Invasive Species: Lionfish, one singular lionfish living in a coral reef could impact local fish recruitment by up to 79 percent

Definition: Temperate deciduous or temperate broadleaf forests are a variety of temperate forests 'dominated' by deciduous trees that lose their leaves each winter.

Average Temperature: 10 C, 50 F

Average Precipitation: 75.5cm-150cm, or 30in - 59in

Favorite Animal & Adaptation: The coyote has thick fur to keep it warm in the winter.

Favorite Plant & Adaptation: The oak tree has thick roots to absorb water from the ground when there is no rain.

Invasive species: the Emerald Ash Borders feed on Ash trees, then they lay their eggs in the trees. The trees are then destroyed by the larva overfeeding.

a.A savanna is typically hot, dry (depending on season), has a scattered tree pattern, and has tall grasses

b. The average temperature is 68-77 degrees Fahrenheit, 20-25 degrees Celsius in the wet season/winter and 76-86 degrees Fahrenheit and 25-30 degrees Celsius

c.The average amount of rain yearly is 30-40 in 76-102 cm 

d.The cheetah has developed camouflage to blend in with the savanna scenery and curved claws to run faster

e. The baobab tree has a thick trunk and is very tall so it can store much more water and nutrients

f. The big-headed ant is an invasive species in the savanna. It digs into whistling thorn trees and kills the Acacia ants that are native to those trees.

Definition: Freshwater Biome; a biome with little to no salt at all

pH: 8.12-8.55

Zones: Littoral zone, the main basin, and then coastal areas

Animal: River Otter. Allow the otter to stay warm because of their water-repellent fur. Slim body shape allows quick movements to avoid predators  

Plant: Arrowhead. Grows fast and strong to combat harsh conditions. Then the hooks on the pants will enable it to climb and grow off of other things to maximizer life
