I am a counselor educator

Three features that bring value to teaching are:

(1) Fostering a positive relationship of mutual trust and respect where students can feel safe to learn and seek guidance when needed.

(2) Having clarity in the way information is presented to provide the best opportunity for students to learn.

(3) Fairness in approach where all students will have an equal chance at success and avoid any real or implied bias within the classroom.

I am a mental health counselor

My work as a mental health counselor informs my work as an educator and vice versa. There is a synergy that comes from being passionate about both career paths that makes each one stronger.

I am an advocate for DEI

It is not only about opportunity, it sometimes requires us to level the playing field and that is why Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is important to me.

I am a researcher

My research focused on traumatic grief and posttraumatic growth. The participants in the study were parents who had lost their adult children to police and community homicide. I repurposed this model from one that was presented to me while a member of the Faith in Times of Trauma as we researched the lived experience of Haitians following the earthquake of 2010.

I am open to new opportunities - External Member Dissertation Committee

I had the distinct honor and pleasure to serve as an external member on a dissertation committee. While she was not a candidate for a psychology or mental health counseling degree, I was able to offer her adequate and appropriate guidance that balanced her two internal committee members' output.
