My dad took it with us when I moved to my current house when I was 4. He used to play me and my brother his favorite songs almost every night before we went to bed. My dad then worked on teaching my brother how to play when I moved onto middle school. Eventually, I myself tried learning right around when high school started. This object look just like any ordinary guitar, but it's much more than that to me. Not only does it signify my family and the memories we've shared, but it’s been there throughout almost all of my biggest life transitions. It stands as a reminder that as my life goes on, no matter what happens, the memories I've created and the relationship I have with my family will always be there. I approached this project with an open mind, knowing that I would probably have to restart or rethink the process. When I was little I remember always being told that scissors are not toys, they're sharp tools that you could cut your fingers with. This is just a game I remember growing up playing throughout my childhood whereas two finger represent scissors. I took this symbolization literally and made realistic and functional scissor-fingers. I approached this project knowing that I would have to take time and go slowly if I didn't want to mess up the final glycerin model. My goal was to make this sculpture as realistic as possible so I wanted to incorporate personalized aspects such as the fleshy look of skin, the actual blades and handle of functional scissors, messy nail polish, smooth and "more plump" fingers to match a child's. The idea is that dolphins and oil are not actually suppose to go together, it stands as a metaphor for the harm it causes sea-life. Oil spills have become a prominent source of pollution in oceans due to coastal cities, vehicles, industrial buildings and waste, etc. This monuments purpose is to bring awareness to the effects this pollution has on marine life. It will be placed in major oil spill locations, (Santa Barbara Spill, Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill…) either actually in the water or on the site (platform / reserve) the event occurred at. Getting to know the software was a little tricky, but after a while I got to know the tools and settings and things went by a lot faster. It was cool how we could incorporate other models, as well as add our own personalizations to it, for example, I added my own touch to the oil tank and the oil itself. Throughout my whole life I have always been drawn to the ocean and sea-life, it's my life goal and dream to live on the ocean someday. Whenever I go on an ocean vacation I make sure to take home shells, not only because they pretty, but as a sentiment to the trip and memories I had. I wanted this to be sort of an organizer for the collection, separating them by location, that way each section will hold the different memories and stories I had at that location. The inside of the box is pretty basic, separated into six different sections. The whole box was painted / stained all the same dark wood to create a solid look. The lid consists of one large light-colored seashell to pop from the dark wood, as well as light-colored crushed seashells for details. The overall process of creating this box was pretty challenging, as we had to learn how to navigate the wood shop machines, it even required a little math.
