This Staffing Model offers the highest level of direct care. As the Patient is only cared for by their RN, there is no worry for improper delegation but the RN's can also become overly taxed with assisting patients with ADLs, or performing Administrative duties. This Staffing model normally affords the RN a more beneficial Nurse to patient, but costs the hospital more money due to the pay rate of extra RN personnel.

This Staffing Model Adds an ACP/PCT into the Nursing team. The ACP/PCT is generally assigned patients, and is delegated tasks by that patient's RN. The ACP/PCT assists with ADLs and other basic care needs but is unable to assess the patient of administer medications.
Given the same staffing conditions, the addition of ACP/PCTs has been shown to increase the amount of serious infections in patients on some units. There is a serious risk for improper delegation in this staffing model and there is a serious requirement for strong leadership to ensure these mistakes are not being made.

The RN Skill Mix staffing model adds an LPN or LVN into the Healthcare Team. The LPN/LVN is able to help the RN pass medications and help with other medical tasks. This Staffing model is in decline as more healthcare institutions prefer the BSN level of education for their Healthcare Teams.

Each staffing model brings unique challenges and issues. Patient care is always the top priority and hospitals will continue to monitor and change their staffing models to increase positive outcomes in patients and limit financial burden as much as possible. No staffing model is the perfect answer but each model can achieve these goals with the proper leadership and support.
