Freedmen's Bureau was created because congress passed an act to establish a Bureau for the Relief of Freedmen and Refugees. Freedmen's Bureau provided food, shelter, clothing, medical services, and land.

April 15, 1865: Abraham Lincoln is assassinated

Abraham Lincoln was Americas 16th President. Mr. Lincoln was opposed to slavery and the expansion of it.

April 15, 1865: Andrew Johnson becomes president

Andrew Johnson was the 17th American President, who was formally vice president to Abraham Lincoln. His reconstruction plan called for amnesty and restoration of property except for slaves to all Southerners who will swear loyalty to the Union. His plan also required states to ratify the 13th amendment.

Fall 1865 : Black Codes start to be implemented throughout the South

Southern legislatures drafted "Black Codes" which kept white supremacy. The laws have restricted Black citizens. Freedmen were prohibited from work except form working in the fields. Black people refusing to sign labor contracts could have been punished, unemployed black men were seized and auctioned to planters as laborers, black children could be taken from their families and made to work.

Dec 6, 1865 13th Amendment is ratified

The 13th amendment is ratified which abolishes slavery. Slavery is only permitted it persecuted for crime.

Dec 24, 1865 : KKK is formed

April, 1866: Civil Rights Act of 1866

May 1, 1866: Memphis Race Riot

White civilians and police killed 46-48 African Americans and destroyed 90 houses, schools, and four churches in Memphis, Tennessee. This occurred for three days.

March 2, 1867 - March 11, 1868: Reconstruction Acts of 1867

Winter 1868: Southern Constitutional Conventions including freedman

The freedmen were now able to vote and participate. This resulted to new state constitutions guaranteeing the right of black adult males to vote and run for public office.

February 3, 1870: 15th Amendment is ratified

April 13, 1873: The Colfax Massacre

1875: Mississippi Plan or “Shotgun Policy”

In 1875 white conservatives in the state came up with the "Mississippi Plan" to insure their victory in the upcoming elections. This plan used intimidation of black voters and outright fraud to guarantee that white Democrats would take control of the state government.
