The patient, a 15-year-old female with a medical history, has severe electrolyte imbalances as a result of her anorexia nervosa. She has low levels of potassium (K) at 3.0 mg/dL, phosphorus (Phos) at 1.5 mg/dL, and magnesium (Mg) at 1.2 mg/dL. Her parents say she has been rejecting meals and exercising excessively, resulting in a low BMI of 13.6. These symptoms are similar to anorexia nervosa, which can result in severe inadequate nutrition and electrolyte imbalance. This patient's electrolyte levels and non-eating habits may put her at risk for refeeding syndrome.

Given this patient's medical history, I would prescribe a nutrition plan to prevent refeeding syndrome and support her recovery from anorexia nervosa. She should start with a low-calorie diet that includes green vegetables like broccoli, spinach, cucumbers, and lean proteins like salmon and chicken breast. Whole grains such as oats and brown rice should be included because they are high in vitamins, fiber, and minerals. I would also offer her necessary and affordable supplements, as well as have her check her electrolytes regularly. if this patient continues to resume oral nutrition she would be at risk of refeeding syndrome which would cause her to need treatment. If she constantly asks how much she weighs, I would tell her that I understand you are concerned about your weight, but that is not helpful for your recovery. We are more concerned with what nutrients your body requires, and that she should follow our nutrition plan, which will nourish her body and get her into a healthy state.
