Schools play a vital role in preparing students to become global citizens.

ACS Doha International School sends each year a student on the flying eye hospital Orbis. The student will experience how "giving vision to someone who doesn't have it is life-changing and reverberates through families, communities and, ultimately, economies".

Moreover, schools hire international teachers; increasing the diversity among its staff and exposing the students to different cultures.

Each year the school celebrates the "International Day". Students and teachers from over 50 different nationalities work together to present the costume, music, food, art, and accomplishments of their own country. On this day, students and teachers move around different stands to learn about the countries presented.

Global Citizenship in Biology Class

In biology, students learn about core concepts and discuss its effect on living and non-living things. Terms such as global warming, air and water pollution, biogeochemical cycles, biomes, demographic changes and many others require from the student to think outside the box and to study the effect on the global level.

One of the assignments I asked my students to do is to research and present an example of succession from their own country and discuss how the biotic and abiotic factors have contributed in transforming the land. This will raise global awareness of natural and human behaviors that affect different areas around the globe.

I did this in my ESS course and I am looking forward for some suggestions to be done in my biology class.

Accepting the other and respecting his/her opinion is any IB course requirement.

Students in international schools come with different backgrounds and habits. Since students collaborate to solve exercises in class, research about a topic and present it, or do a lab investigation, they need to accept and respect the differences among one another. This way, students develop international-mindedness.
