Working in groups of 3-5, we evaluated sections of our concertina books to see which segments would be best to combine into one hybrid frontage.

Our frontage had to be as close as to A1 (594 x 841mm) as we could get it and also had to include moving elements such as windows/ doors that open or something that appears/ disappears or pops up.

Things we had to consider while making our frontage:

It must be portable - we made it almost entirely out of cardboard which is very lightweight so our frontage could be moved.

Do you need a counter balance/ supports for you frontage? - we created the porch with the intention of using it as a counter balance for the house and used layers of cardboard to support the house and prevent it from bending and keep it upright

I made it by the inside ridge of cardboard along a straw and using hot glue to connect it to the cardboard which allowed it to move freely along the straw. We also reinforced the straws connection to the wall with more hot glue to make sure it would stay in place when we moved the door.

The orange tape I used to cover the box I used reminds me of rust and the steampunk aesthetic which could be interesting to explore as a potential setting for where this robot is from and its function.

While my robot has strayed significantly from my original plan, I think that this version is an improvement as it has a clearer purpose that is communicated through its design. I do regret mostly using tape and hot glue to connect the pieces of my robot together but given the lack of materials and time constraints, using these methods was the most realistic and allowed me to finish this project in time.

Initially, I planned to use paper plates to construct the body of my robot and add details to that structure but the plates were too flimsy and I didn't have a reliable way to connect them together while still being able to convey that my structure is a robot so I switched to a sturdy box to give myself a solid structure to build off of. I wrapped the box in tape to add more visual texture and added weights to the bottom to help my robot stand despite the front heavy design.

The interactive element was interesting to play with but the images themselves are also aesthetically appealing. Because of how they were taken, the images have a delicate and timeless quality that reminds me of lakes in paintings.

I could explore this idea in my project by painting waterscapes which could also link to my research on fear and scale and thalasophobia or the fear of deep water.

Zadie Xa's work turns her room in the gallery into an experience with the mirrored floor, hanging shells that played music and the use of 3D elements on some of her pieces which makes the entire room feel interactive. The mirrored floor adds to the spiritualistic nature of her work, offering a new perspective of the pieces and is reminiscent of a calm body of water which is common imagery in spiritual settings. Xa's pieces also link to water by depicting marine life, some of the pieces being fragmented could be commentary about the state of the world's oceans and pollution destroying habitats that are vital to the ocean's ecosystem.

Overall, walking around the room felt refreshing and calming, Xa's use of colour and form is inspiring and visually appealing. To take inspiration from her work for my project, I could consider my use of colour in relation to the emotional impact I want my piece to have.

Rene Matić's work is a political and social commentary explored primarily through photography but they also use other mediums such as sculpture and textiles. The centerpiece of their room in the gallery is a giant white flag with "no place for violence" printed onto it, the white flag is commonly associated with a call for peace while the text could be seen as a criticism of violence used as a means of control. Matić describes this piece as calling out the irony between political words and actions. In relation to my theme of scale, the large scale of this piece can be seen as being representative of the size of the problem Matić is commenting on.

Mohammed Sami's pieces are very large, each one taking up a majority of the wall. This not only links to my theme of scale through the sheer size of some of his pieces but it also could be a link to the meaning behind his pieces, they are inspired by themes of memory and conflict, his pieces consuming the space links to how these topics can also consume our minds as well as how memory can be altered as we grow or our perspective changes.

Aesthetically, I enjoy Sami's paintings, they feel similar to the idea of calm before the storm and also as if the meaning behind them is lingering just out of reach, inviting the viewer to look for longer to figure it out. His pieces will be interpreted differently by everyone as our perception is influenced by our own memory and experiences.

To take inspiration from his work, I would like to consider how I can push the material I work with to create stunning pieces with intricate details and hidden meaning.

Nnena Kalu's drawings hang around the room and display a form of abstract, controlled chaos. Her works appeared messy and stressful at first but the repetition of forms that appear in her work makes the pieces feel more delicate and intentional. Kalu's use of pastels is interesting with how it contrasts the traditional use of pastels to create pieces that feel soft and gentle while Kalu's pieces are almost in direct opposition to this idea.

To take inspiration from Kalu's illustrations, I could consider my use of colour and form and the different ways I can represent an object and work in a more abstract style while still allowing myself to care about the finer details.

One thing I liked about Kalu's drawings was that you can see each mark she made and how the piece came together. Some areas appear to have been scratched at which adds extra visual texture and interest, this in combination with the wild nature of her drawings makes the pieces have an almost violent nature, possibly reflecting a release of energy or a conflict.

Kalu's sculptures are colourful and abstract, similar to her illustrations yet these pieces feel more chaotic due to the amalgamation of materials. The use of tape and rope in these pieces makes them feel trapped or contained which contrasts the bright, colourful fabrics that make up the main bodies of the sculptures.

To take inspiration from Kalu's sculptures, I could work in 3D and make an abstract sculpture based on my research and experiment more with colour.

They suggested adding something to fill the white space and eventually I decided bubbles would be best for this because bubble baths and ducks are commonly depicted together and they link to my research as bubbles are very delicate and fragile similar to the environment which can be harmed by plastic waste pollution. Bubbles also vary in size and colour which I feel fits with my exploration of scale.

Megalophobia is described as the intense fear of large objects, causing anxiety and panic. It is considered a specific phobia, or "an intense, irrational fear of something that poses little or no actual danger".

This fear can be caused by:

Skyscrapers, large animals, expansive spaces, large ships, aeroplanes and large bodies of water

The trigger for this fear varies from person to person. This links to my exploration of scale because I aim to create pieces exploring large objects and it is important to consider the various negative and positive ways an audience might be affected by my theme of scale.

Thalasophobia is the fear of deep bodies of water, it can be caused by:

Oceans, seas, lakes, being in deep bodies of water, the vastness of the sea, aquatic animals, great distance from land, boats, submarines, emptiness of the ocean, being near large bodies of water

Fearing large bodies of water is partly a human evolutionary response that also links to the fear of the unknown and how we avoid things that could easily kill us/ our communities such as drowning, floods and dangerous bodies of water.

Water is also often compared to our minds or mental health. In media, the sea is sometimes depicted as a punishment or an unstoppable force, for example the film Jaws uses this fear to build tension with many scenes contrasting the violence with an empty, almost serene sea. This links to my theme scale because of the overwhelming size and depth of the ocean. To explore this further, I could consider how the depth of the ocean affect people, for example, decompression sickness from divers ascending too quickly.

I am very pleased with this piece and I think it is a satisfying conclusion to my exploration of scale. If I were to add anything to this piece, I would consider how I could make the ducks more defined in relation to each other and on the page. The lack of definition gives the piece an unintentional surreal quality that distracts from the original intention behind the piece. As well as this, I could have made the pink duck smaller to have a greater contrast and show of scale between it and the yellow ducks but the size I settled on works very well and looks quite charming and cute. I am especially happy with how the bubbles look, I was able to capture the light and colours reflecting in the bubble off of the ducks better than I expected.

Rubber ducks are a toy that can be found worldwide, originating in America in the late 1800s after the invention of rubber by the chemist Charles Goodwin. The first rubber ducks were solid and did not float. In 1947, Peter Ganine created a duck toy out of vinyl which became very popular and was sold around the world. Variants of the rubber duck are also sold in different colours, shapes, and materials as collectable toys.

Pharaoh Tutankhamun's tomb held a collection of toys from his childhood such as a duck toy with an opening for food. His tomb also held a pair of intricate earrings with duck heads made from gold, cloisonne and blue glass. In Ancient Egypt, ducks represented fertility, regeneration and connecting life to the Nile. They could have also been representative of divine protection and rebirth.

In 1992, a shipment of 28800 duck toys spilt into the Pacific Ocean. Scientists used this opportunity to study ocean currents and followed the paths the ducks took, revealing that currents connect all over the world. The ducks are known as flotsametrics as they were used to study flotsam/ discarded objects in the ocean and the study helped create a simulation of the ocean's currents which maps the path of items in the ocean currents such as the ducks. This simulation has also been used to help analyse and track the most likely path of plastic that has been dumped into the ocean. However, this event also showcased that plastic survives mostly unaffected for a long time even under the harsh conditions and 25 years in the Pacific Ocean, causing harm to delicate marine ecosystems and habitats.

The Give A Duck Foundation is a charity for children's cancer that aims to support and give a Chemo Duck to every child diagnosed with cancer in England and Wales to comfort them and help them understand their treatment. Play therapy is used to make the appointments feel less scary and allows nurses and doctors to explain what will happen to them through the duck. This charity links to my theme scale and my personal theme of something small causing a big difference because it originated in America but was registered in the UK in 2015, slowly becoming more widespread and having a larger impact. It links to my personal theme because donators can give a relatively small amount of money to have a massive impact on a child's life and to try make their experience through cancer treatment easier.
