I've whitnessed microaggressions in meetings where parents have been asked in front of the entire team if they need an interpreter, after they've begun speaking. I feel like those are conversations and accomodations that need to take place during scheduling and not when the meeting is about to begin. I feel like those questions are sometimes made with the intent of providing cultural sensitivity and NOT out of malice, however, after watching the video I feel like that may make individuals feel uncomfortable and/or put on the spot based on their ethnicity and manner of communication.

Great video. I liked how the different types of microagressions were explained with examples. I do see some of my older ASD students that are in my social communication groups demonstrating microinsults. Many students with ASD do not really have a 'verbal filter' and will ask questions or make comments that are insulting, usually without understanding why their comment is insulting. I do not know how to change the name on this padlet from Anonymous to my own name - it's Amy V.

That was somewhat heart breaking to watch, as some of the behaviors seemed more like overt racism than microaggressions. Maybe there isn't really that much of a difference . . . ? I think the uncomfortable thing about talking about race/perceived differences is that we don't want to stereotype people according to race or some other difference, but being "colorblind" isn't really a solution either; it can be the elephant in the room. As school personnel, it's just really important to get to know our students, co-workers as individuals, no matter what the racial or cultural background. Karen

Not too many years ago I mistakenly thought it was good to be "color blind" that it meant I accepted everyone, when in fact it meant I was denying important aspects of identity and experience. I'm a bit worried that I may continue to have other blind spots or unhelpful beliefs and may be guilty of microaggressions. I'm working on this.

Once of the challenges for me is how to deal with a microaggression in a way that helps the student learn rather than feel unfairly treated. For example one student recently said something about support LGBTQ rights and another student wrote disgusting in the chat. I reminded students that they needed to be respectful of all students even if they have different opinions. A few students then chatted things such as that's not nice to the kid who said disgusting. I was glad that so many students were being allies to the students in the pride community, but didn't want that person who made the microaggressive remark to feel ganged up on. It is not easy to make sure all students feel a sense of belonging in a society that is more polarized than ever.

It is important to recognize people as individuals and not make assumptions. Also we need to constantly remind ourselves as teachers that what we say and do has a huge impact on our students. We are all human but as a teacher it is very important that if we make a mistake we own that and make it clear to our students that we realize we said something that was not right. Mistakes are OK but you have to recognize when they are make and change.

As a student I experienced many microagressions for being the only female in a mathematician program. I have always remembered comments that the profressor made and how other students never wanted to be my group member as I was female. This has really driven me to encourage all students to reach their individual goals and not judge them for whatever direction they have choosen.

Good video. I liked how they broke down the different types of microaggressions and gave examples of each one. I think this would be a powerful video to show to older students. I feel that students sometimes do not realize how hurtful their words can be. I was shocked at some of the comments made by teachers. I feel at the elementary level time spent working with students on kindness, compassion and acceptance is so important. Deb W

The DESE article was actually interesting in that it involved 2 areas that I have been working on with the students - this year,, and some of last year. I'm looking into DJ Cool Herc and have spent a lot of time reading and researching information on Hamilton, The Musical. I've been trying to find a way into discussion of rap and hip hop with the students so that there is some connectivity in music class to what the students are listening to on their own. These are good resources, but I found some info on line that lead you through the process of writing some rhythmic rhyming (rap) and have use a little of it with some of the students the last couple of days - at all grade levels. It's been interesting to note their response to this type of activity, and to see which students can rise to the creativity standard that is required in this type of thinking. It has not always correlated to age group, which I have found very interesting. I tried to print some of the article but was unsuccessful - will try again at home. Thanks!
