It started a devastating fire that destroyed the city. It happened because of an accumulation of pressure on the faults that needed to be released. This also happened because of something called plate tectonics, and the boundaries there which is a transform boundary that is known for making earthquakes. This affected everyone in a 296 mile radius, they could feel the shaking in this area.

This fault ended up sliding past each other very violently, as well as releasing a lot of built up pressure. This made it so that there was a rupture of ground surface, or basically it made a massive Earthquake. Also the tectonic plates were moved by convection currents from the mantle. Gas pipes were destroyed which caused a huge fire which is what caused fire damages. There was also emotional damage since there were over 3,000 casualties, properties were destroyed, and a lot of people became homeless, due to the earthquake or fire. There was also mental damage right after the earthquake as well as lots of people were confused and traumatized, which also made people start stealing, including the army, as they thought they were going to die. The estimated cost for this back then was around $235 million dollars, but today this would cost around $6.3 billion dollars.

The hydrosphere was involved because the earthquakes epicenter was located in the ocean that is by San Francisco. The geosphere was involved because the tectonic plates move on the surface of earth which is one of the things that the geosphere system has. After this earthquake they set new regulations and helped make buildings better prepared for this specific disaster. They also made some buildings fire resistant now since the buildings were burning down after the earthquake.

It was a 7.8 on the rector scale. It caused a fire because gas pipes broke, this devastated the city. 3,000 people died and 300,000 people were left homeless. People took advantage of this and looted meaning the army had to stop them. Though there were reports that the army looted as well.
