Read the IC update, and think about the picture located at the top. What does this mean to you? How does this look in your class?

I believe that the literacy block shouldn't be quiet! It should be engaging with students collaborating, engaging in activities, and thinking aloud! Literacy is fun and it can take you any where you want to go and the students should be allowed to GO!!! :) LWilder

In kindergarten, we do a lot of modeling of how to have a discussion. We use turn and talk frequently. Literacy stations are also another time in which students can collaborate and work together.

Again this is a great practice for Kindergarten, so the upper grades can take discussions deeper! I LOVE IT!
LWilder

In kindergarten, our literacy block is not quiet. Students are engaged, collaborating with their group members, and practicing skills that have been taught. We model discussions and also use turn and talk. They are able to practice the skills that have been taught with a partner.
This is a great practice for Kindergarten, because they are expected to do these things in upper grades. So the earlier they learn the better! :) LWilder

Ah, I found the add button. In 2nd grade we have centers where they can work with their team and share their knowledge. I model different G. O. for them to utilize. Having them discuss their thoughts and ideas helps others with the thinking process and they do better when they hear their peers and not just their teacher.

I love the idea of incorporating a menu, and I REALLY love that one section of this resource was geared specifically at K-2! It's even harder to incorporate ownership and choice into a lower grade classroom, but this article is helpful. Compacting and menus (even menus with pictures) are an easy way to ensure that all kids will be happy and learning :)
-Taylor Horne
Yes, and you can give them 2 choices instead of 4. That would be great way to incorporate menus with a little more structure. LWilder

My classroom is anything but quiet. My students are actively talking to each other about questions or are working collaboratively on task cards in a center. I think there are times when a quiet classroom is a nice thing, for example when we read to self, I like for it to be quiet. Other than that my kiddos are constantly talking to each other about their ideas and thoughts on a topic or read aloud book that I have just read to them!

That is awesome and I am a witness to the collaboration within your class. Collaboration is a great tool for the success of students. LWilder

I feel it is vital for students to be given opportunities work with peers, as we are expected to do with our colleagues on a daily basis. At certain points in a read aloud, I'll allow students to discuss their reactions so far in the selected story with their peers. They make connections with the text and with each other!
