The Women’s suffrage movement in the early 1900s was a turning point in women’s rights. This movement was what led to the 19th amendment (women’s right to vote). There were many notable associations during this time, but specifically the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) who used a state-by-state tactic. Meanwhile, other associations like National Women’s Party (NWP) protested by picketing, hunger strikes, and confrontation with government. The boldness of their actions gathered attention nation-wide and pressured the law makers. The early 1900s shifted society’s view on the role of women. With more women joining the workforce, getting higher education, and being active in politics. In the U.S. World War I, continued to undermine the essential part of women's political participation as women’s contributions to the war effort were recognized. Therefore, by 1920 activism had a big effect on changing social roles and resulted in the passing of the 19th Amendment. The approval of the 19th amendment showed just a bit of the change coming.

Alice Stokes Paul (1885-1977) was a women's rights activist and suffragist. Alice Paul was a leader in this movement helping to pass the 19th amendment. Alice Paul was known for her combative approach to suffrage which set her apart from other suffragists. An example of Paul’s tactics would be, picketing the White House and hunger strikes. In 1916 Alice Paul founded the National Woman's Party (NWP), which was more radical than NAWSA. Her group pressured and influenced the decision to make the 19th amendment pass.

The women’s suffrage movement still has lasting impact to this day. The most notable being voting rights. In the U.K. the Representation of the People Act 1918 allowed women over the age of 30 to vote with full suffrage granted in 1928. Both in U.S. and U.K. were huge impacts of the women’s suffrage movement. With the right to vote women also became active in politics. Influencing elections, making of policies, and swaying public opinion. Women being active in politics made women’s issues gain more attention.
