ON 3rd November 2018, a professor who teaches in Sierra Leone came to our school.
ON THAT OCCASION, our class asked him some questions and from his answers we took these pieces of information.
FIRST OF ALL, Prof. Carlini SAID he saw the war in Sierra Leone because there was a long civil war from 1991 to 2001. DURING THE WAR, there were violence and many attacks; adults and also some children were soldiers.
AS FAR AS THE SOCIETY IN SIERRA LEONE IS CONCERNED, WE LEARNT THAT many children are victims of drugs and starvation because there’s lack of food, and they have only one meal each day, so they don’t eat much. Every day they eat a lot of rice or palm oil, sweet potatoes, papaya, mango, banana. People never eat fish or meat because it’s too expensive.
ANOTHER ISSUE IS THAT there isn’t any water at home, so girls have to go to wells every morning and then take it home for the family.
Family is very extended and important in Sierra Leone: there aren’t words for 'cousin' because it’s offensive, you say “this is my brother/sister“, and you must also call your aunt “mother”.
TALKING ABOUT FAMILIES AND RITUALS, the kalavash is a traditional container used for the ritual of the marriges, where you put cola (that were used when there weren’t money).
AS REGARDS SCHOOL AND EDUCATION, Prof. Carlini said that
there are primary and secondary schools, but not everybody can have an education because the students have to pay for it.
The LESSONS start at 8 a.m. and finish at 1 o’clock p.m. In the secondary school students study Humanities, Art, Science and Commerce (Buisness).
The students don’t have books to study because they are too expensive.
FOR WHAT CONCERNS SCHOOL BUILDINGS, In Sierra Leone there aren’t lights and there aren't any facilites. Tha teachers ALWAYS write on blackboards, and the students have to take notes.
CONCERNING HIS OWN EXPERIENCE, Professor Carlini said he teaches at Makeni’s university. He started to teach there 4 years ago, SO HE KNOWS THE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM QUITE WELL.
To enter university, students have to do the WAASCE State Exam, but it’s very difficult, and you must have five credits to enter university, in the subjects you studied AT secondary school.
The MARKS are given by the teachers in PERCENTAGE, or from F to A. He thinks African schools are more difficult and challenging THAN ITALIAN ONES.
FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE COUNTRY'S GEOGRAPHY, Freetown is the capital city and KREO (Creole) is the original language that common people ARE USED TO SPEAKING. HOWEVER, the main language is English.
AS FAR AS RELIGION IS CONCERNED, we learnt that Sierra Leone is a basically a Muslim country.
CONCERNING THE LEISURE TIME, People listen to traditional music and young people listen to pop music from Nigeria. Local bands play the traditional music DURING the main celebrations and festivals.
AS REGARDS SPORTS, boys usually play football and girls like playing volleyball, but IT is difficult to have a ball to play with.
A RELEVANT ISSUE in Sierra Leone is corruption.

From the point of view of the languages one one can say that, in Sierra Leone the official language is English. This language is spoken in schools, in parliament and in many other structures. Another very spoken language is Krio; it's a mixture of languages and dialects. Talking about children, education we can say that, when children are young the father teaches them a dialect, Limba while the mother teaches the Timmi (another dialect).
Children, before attending primary school, go to the Koran school and learn Arabic because Sierra Leone is a muslim country.
As far as religion IS CONCERNED, Mr Carlini says that in Sierra Leone there are also other religions: christianity and ATR (African Traditional religion, the old animism). There are also many churches, cathedrals and mosques but people prefer to pray independently at home. They invoke their ancestors that pray to God because they are closer to him.
From the point of view of school, one can say that there are three types of schools: christianity schools, muslim schools and schools of the state. Each of these has its rites and teachings.
Talking about marriages, we can say that weddings in African culture take place in the bride's home. Before marriage women and men must do an initiation ritual. They have to go to the secret bush and here they learn how to pray. Men must survive alone in the wood for three years. Women have to survive 10 days and after having found the mask of their protecting spirit they receive gifts and they dance.
As far as agricolture IS CONCERNED, Africans cultivate only in the rainy season. They cultivate rice, palm, peanuts, mamola... Makeni's typical foods are rice with palm oil, fish, beans or peanut butter. They use a lot of spices but eat no meat because it's too expensive. African fish is very good, and Chinese and Spanish steal it and also because of this violation Africa is a poor continent.
I think this experience was very important because it allowed me to know different traditions, religions, rituals... that have improved my culture and my thought.

From the point of view of food, we can say that people of Sierra Leone cultivate rice, palm, manioca and peanuts. Rice is the basic food and it is the most eaten and most common. They eat also hot pepper and fish with palm oil. In Sierra Leone people love rice and also peanut butter that they derive from peanut plantations.
Talking about languages, in Sierra Leone there are 12 different languages. The most important languages are English, Arabic, French and Krio. Krio is a mixture of different languages.
Concerning religions, there are 3 main religions: Christianity, Islam and ATR, African traditional religion, but Sierra Leone is a Muslim country, in fact 70% of the population is Muslim. Muslim and Christian religions are also taught in school. In the country there are churches, mosques and cathedrals, but people of ATR always pray at home. This people pray to the ancestors because they are closer to God. They also put the names of their ancestors on newborns.
In my opinion this was a very charming experience because it is worthy to know how you live in a particular place outside Italy and especially away from Europe. This experience made us discover traditions, cultures and ways of living different from ours. I really liked it. Also in the future I would like to have another similar experience.

The story of the liberation of slaves left in the territories of Sierra Leone was mentioned in the name of the capital Freetown, "free city".

Our special guest mr. Carlini told us about the PLACE where he lives in particular, the thing that most intrigued me was the warmth of the population: people are welcoming, good and generous always willing to help.

in Sierra Leone, life is very complex, in fact there is not much energy and food must be used with caution too, in fact you do not eat meat, but a much loved food is rice, I like rice too!

A very nice thing is that the place is full of schools, some even divided into Christian schools and Muslim schools.

Mr. Carlini also explained to us that the two most spoken languages are Krio and English while at school the third language is French

In Sierra Leone, the population is very poor and very wealthy people are rarely encountered.

the Upper school and the middle schools are quite epensive, while the elementary schools are free: High schools are divided into three TYPES: art, science and commerce.

The political SYSTEM is divided into presidential politics that is the official government and finally the 'local kings': in fact in the South African part there is still the tradition of kings, in fact we can find 92 reigns.

In Sierra Leone we also find the marriage ceremony, a very important ceremony where the groom goes to his bride's parents with a container full of money he offers parents; the amount of money is based on the beauty of the bride.

In Africa and also in Sierra Leone we find the initiation rites that are divided into: isolation, physical evidence and ceremony to return and welcome from the community.

Last saturday (3.11.18) our class met Prof.Carlini, a teacher who teaches in Sierra Leone. We asked him some questions about sport, food, music, school and teen issues.

He told us he teaches in an University, in the centre of Sierra Leone (in Makeni) and he started his work about 4 years ago.

He saids: teenegers (in secondary school) can choose in 3 branches (art —>humanities, science ,commerce —> buisness). The school system is: 6 years of elementary school, 3 years of junior school, 3 years of high school and 4 years of university. School starts at 8 a.m. and finishes at 1 or 2 p.m. Then we asked him which are the Sierra Leone’s problems : in their school there isn’t lights or books, so the teachers write all on the blackboard and the students must copy the notes; and another problem is the war, Mr Carlini said us; he saw the civil war (from 1991 to 2001) and it was terrible and very difficult. The country unfortunately is poor, and there are many issues, for example, the water because there isn’t in the house; fortunately drugs aren’t a problem because there aren’t money to buy it. The corruption is a big issue.

In Sierra Leone the most important music is the traditional music with the drums, but sometimes the young people listen pop music and Nigerian music.

The official language is English but Creol is the local language.

The religion is Muslim (about 60%).

In the country they practice sport: volleyball is the most popular for the girl and football is the most popular for the boys, like in Italy.

Elena’s report

The professor of an University went to our school to talk about the life in Sierra Leone and about some informations about him. We asked him some different and important questions.
He suffered war in 1992to 2001 , but the worst and terribal was in 1994 , when solders made brain washed to a little children, boys and girls. There was a group who live in forest , which setted a war .
He wasn’t a victim of a racism because people who live in Sierra Leone are very friendly .
After that we asked him about problems. There are a lot of problems in Sierra Leone , for example access to secondary school . School fees are too high and books are too expensive.
Lot’s of people don’t have a family. Another problem is food . There is a lack of food . The professor told about the teen iusses. In Sierra Leone werwn’t problems like drugs, because are expensive , or eating disorders, despite people eat one meal a day .
The man teaches in a University . Maken is a centre of SL Unimark , where there are 100’000 students . There are amongh three subjects in secondary school : arts ( humanities ) , science and commerce ( business) , which lasts three years . There are great University , 100 . The mars are A and B . Was sec is the state exam , from free town ) . You must have 5 credits to enter to University , which include English .
Live in Africa is more difficult because there are no facilities , books and electricity.
Many people listen traditional music , with drums . Traditional music is played at celebrations . Many people have phones so they listens with them pop music of Nigeria . There are young artieses.
Creole is a tipical language that people speak and is similar English . ( es. how di body ?) .
There isn’t water in house so in the morning , girls must fetch the water , and they have to sweep , clean and do housework .
Most boys play sports , especially football because isn’t expensive . The Lich Stars is a national football team in Sierra Leone . A few people play volleyball because this sport is too expensive for them .
The calabash is where you put the money or another thinks , for marrege .
Tipical food are sweet potatoes , fish . They products also alamonds .

Last Saturday a man who teaches in Sierra Leone, in Africa, came to our school and talked about his life.
He saw the civil war in the 1994, when he arrived.
In that period people used children to fight, so they became soldiers (both girls and boys); he also said that there’s a bit of jealousy between him and the locals but he’ve never been bullied.

Freetown is the capital of Sierra Leone, the name derives from the fact that there live free people that in the past used to be slaves.

Then he told us about school: he has been teaching for four years in an university, called UniMak, that’s catholic but still open to everyone, and it’s in the town of Makeni, situated in the center of Sierra Leone.
The professor thinks that the African school is more challenging and difficult than the Italian one because of the absence of books and electricity, indeed you have to pay the school fees and books are very expensive.
He also said that teachers are not well paid.
The school system is quite similar to the Italian one: there are nursery, 6 years of primary school, 3 of junior-secondary school, 3 of senior-secondary school, 4 of university and college;
In the senior-secondary school you can choose between three options: Arts, Science and Commerce.
In the morning there’s the junior school and in the afternoon the upper one, that thing happens because there are not enough classrooms.
You have to be at school at 8 a.m. when there starts an assembly, then they sing the national anthem and some prayers (a Muslim and a catholic one) and then the lessons star; the school finishes at 1 or 2 p.m.

In Sierra Leone there’s traditional music, played with the drums and sang in creole (which is a similar language to English); but young people usually listen to pop and American music.

Rice is very important, and they also eat a lot of tropical fruits such as mangos, bananas and papayas; they never eat meat

The family in Africa is very important and extended, they call “mothers” all the women that helped them in their life and “brothers” their cousins.

A relevant issue in Sierra Leone is corruption.

The first group asked for teen issues; the professor told us that he saw the war in Sierra Leone between the 1991 and the 2001. In that period the main victims were the children, who were forced to become soldiers, and there were many violence. But now people in Sierra Leone are very friendly , in fact, he himself confirmed us that he had never been a victim of racism. Then we asked him about other problems related to adolescents, such as the drugs abuse; he said it's not a common problem because money is scarce, and drugs cost a lot. In fact even eating can be tiring. At this point we connected to my group which was the topic of food, so we asked him about traditional foods. Actually they always eat rice, palm oil, sweet potaetos, papaya, mango, bananas. Another traditional thing is kalavash, which is used for the ritual of marriges. They never eat meat or fish because it’s too expensive. About drinking it is difficult even to simply drink water; every morning girls have to walk up to the wells to bring water home, to drink and wash.

What about the school, the professor told as that there are primary and secondary schools, but since they have to pay to go there, not everyone can go there. The lessons start at 8 a.m and finish at 1 p.m. In the secondary school the students can study Humanities,Art, Science, and Commerce. In Sierra Leone schools there aren’t light and there aren’t any facilities. Prof. Carlini teaches in Makeni’s university and he said us that the Africa’s schools are more difficult. To enter in university the students have to do the WAASCE state exam, that it is very difficult.

On 3rd November 2018 a man who teaches in a university, in Sierra Leone, came to our school and talked about habits, traditions, rules, and much more there.
My class was divide into various groups and each of them had prepare some questions to ask.

Actually they always eat rice, palm oil, sweet potaetos, papaya, mango, bananas

Another traditional thing is kalavash, which is used for the ritual of marriges. They never eat meat or fish because it’s too expensive. About drinking it is difficult even to simply drink water; every morning girls have to walk up to the wells to bring water home, to drink and wash.

In Sierra Leone girls like to have fun playing volleyball, however it’s difficult to have a ball to play with; boys usually play football.

People listen to traditional music and young people listen to pop music from Nigeria. Local bands play the traditional music in the celebrations.

From te poin of view of places we managed to know that he lives in Makeni, this city is in centre of the country. The University where he teaches is in Makeni too, the “UNIMAK”.The buildings that characterize his area are typical of the “colonial style”, there are Mosques, Churches, football stadiums.Sierra Leone is a developing country, the things are improving. In his area, in Makeni, there are a lot of schools, but from his point of view the schools are not even enough! The climate in Sierra Leone is always fairly warm and hot. There are two seasons that characterize Sierra Leone, the seasons are: -humid or rainy -dry.In Sierra Leone there are only few wild animals left like hippopotamus, scimpanzé, elephant, dear and a good fish.A curiosity is that in Sierra Leone there are not lions. This is what we have been able to know about the places and the enviorment in which he lives.Miriam

On 3rd november 2018, we met a man, prof. Carlini, who teach in a university in Sierra Leone. We ask at him about the issues of this place, like the war that was in 1994 to 2001 and that he saw, he told at us about the soldiers children and the deaths that get; other problems are very much affected by young people, like:
1. The education of the secondary school (where you students can study humanities, art, science, commerce) is at risk, because the books are so expensive.
2. Some people who study at the university have never seen a book before.
3. Daily the teenagers have to go at the water well and take the water needed for the day (for cooking, to wash, ...) and bring it at home .
There aren’t problems of racism and the people are very welcoming, but there are problems of starvation sure enough some people don’t eat fish or meat because is too expensive.
Teenagers in Sierra Leone haven’t the same problems like the teenagers in Italy, sure enough there isn’t too much drug abuse or cases of anorexia and bulimia. But the “routines” are the at least same, like the music.
The traditions are completely different from the ours, like in the weddings there is a bowl called Kalavash where the groom put the berries of “cola”.
The school start at 8 p.m and finish at 1 a.m.

English version:
Teams of Students work together, thinking about some topics for discussion to be dealt with a competent and experienced person, a University professor and Missionary, living and working in a foreign Country and due to visit the Class.
