Alexander was born February 22 1909 in Kremenchuk, Ukraine. He moved to Rostov-on-Don as a kid but was born in Kremenchuk. He died on January 19, 1990 in Rostov-on-Don, Russia.

He became a Jewish lieutenant for the Red Army (Soviets) when he was drafted for service after Germany attacked the Soviet Union in June 1941.

Before he was drafted he trained as a musician.

In October 1941, he was captured by German forces and imprisoned. He later caught typhoid and would have been killed to avoid contamination, but managed to hide his symptoms.

He was caught and shipped to Borishov after a failed escape in May 1942. In August 1942 he was sent to an SS Sheroka Street camp in Minsk after being discovered to be Jewish. Alexander and 79 other POW Soviets were sent to Sobibor after the ghetto was destroyed in September of 1943

Upon arriving at Sobibor, only he was chosen to work in construction, whilst the other POWs that were with him were gassed.

What Happened During the Revolt?

He and Leon Feldhenlder planned and conducted a revolt in Nazi death camp Sobibor that led to roughly 50 Jews being saved. After the gassing of his fellow POWs he and Polish resistance fighter Leon Feldhenlder began to develop a thorough plan for an uprising to be carried out by 6 other Jews that were with them. The plan unfolded on October 14, 1943 in which they all attacked the German guards, managing to kill 10 of them. They then killed and wounded 38 more Ukrainian guards with the weapons they took from the Germans.

Half of the 600 prisoners held in Sobibor escaped, although most of them were killed by the surrounduing minefield or the large manhunts that were put together by German and Polish fascists. The camp was taken down not long after. He rejoined the Soviet army and was gravely wounded in August of 1944. Alexander then went on to be a vital witness against 11 Ukrainian guards that had served at Sobibor.
