Photographer- UPI Photographer
During this time, Jim Crow Laws were in effect which established white authority over colored people. This caused segregation within restaurants, bathrooms, and many other public facilities. Housing discrimination was also another issue that effected colored families. This is because the FHA only offered mortgages to non-mixed developments and discouraged developers from creating racially integrated housing. We chose this picture to be most impacting because even though the end of segregation began with schools, the Civil Rights Movement really started to make an impact on the country when Rosa Parks was arrested for not standing up on the bus.

In September 1957 a group of nine black students enrolled at Little Rock High School. This was pushed after the Brown v. Board of Education case. This integration happened in a area where racism wasn't as bad s the rest of the south and was faced with extreme protest. The president made the military protect the students for fear of what might be done to them. This photograph shows how the people from the town reacted to the integration and you can see they did not like it. This changes how we learn because it shows what they went through and how hard it was to do what is right.

Brown Vs. Board of Education

In 1951, Oliver Brown sued Topeka, Kansas, Board of Education to allow his 8 year old daughter to attend a nearby whites only school. During this time, the NCAAP was being led by Thurgood Marshall. Thurgood Marshall helped Brown by suing public schools all across South, challenging that they violated the "separate but equal" clause. Finally in 1954, the supreme court ruled that "separate but equal" was unconstitutional and schools can no longer be segregated. This picture is powerful because it shows what the future would hold and how the case of Brown vs. Board of Education would impact the lives of children today.

In 1955 the first McDonald's was opened and owned by Ray Kroc in Des Plaines, Illinois. Around this time the car sales were rising to 7 out of 10 families in the US owning cars. After the first McDonald's, more fast food and TV dinners started to appear. The first can version of Coca-Cola were sold and Rock and Roll music began to grow. This photo has an impact on us today because since then McDonald's had evolved and multiplied all over the world. it's one of the most popular fast-food chains and one of the top franchises in the world.

Hugn Hefner made his company Playboy and it brought a different sexual appeal to women. This magazine changed what men looked for in women and changed a lot of their intentions. This changed society because nothing like this came out before this. Playboy gave a message of sexual freedom and opened peoples minds to what is acceptable. Playboy changed society and advanced sex culture. The power of this photograph shows the acceptance he brought and how he did things different.

The Korean War

The Korean War also known as "The Forgotten War" began on June 25, 1950 when soldiers from North Korea crossed the 38th parallel going into South Korea. In July American troops got involved in the war to help South Korea. The Korean War wasn't a popular war, the soldiers involved didn't get the same treatment as the shoulders involved in World War 2 and the Vietnam War, and was also overshadowed by these two wars. Around this time the nascent civil rights movement, the crusade against communism, and underlying divisions in American society. This is an impact on the way we learn/ understand history because this war wasn't really talked about, and in history class we get to learn about this war. This war created decades of tension between North Korea, South Korea, and the United States. Also it helped set the tone for Soviet-American rivalry during the Cold War, profoundly shaping the world we live in today.

Throughout the 1950s, Marilyn Monroe broke what was the status quo. She was an actress, a model, and singer. Marilyn was a sex symbol for the 50s and shifted society's attitude towards sexuality. During this time, problems with civil rights are still existing and America is still working towards recouping from World War II. Marilyn Monroe is such an impacting figure because she wasn't a size 0, and was still seen as a beautiful woman. She made an impact on women to realize that they're still beautiful regardless of their weight and the size they wear.

Jerry Lee Lewis

Throughout the late 1950s, Jerry Lee Lewis challenged the status quo. He gave people music that ranged from rock n' roll to country. He was one of the first true rock n' roll musicians. He did things other artists wouldn't dare to do. At the end of one of his performances, he set his piano on fire with a coke bottle of gasoline, leading to people not liking his style and persona. In 1957, his famous hit "Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On" broke through which ended up selling over 6 million copies nationally. Another hit was "Great Balls of Fire" which sold 5 million copies. Jerry Lee Lewis was impacting to the 1950s because he gave people good music they could listen to. This picture isn't shocking, but can be nostalgic to some because his music was dance worthy, and brought good vibes to those that listened.

It shows the extreme of the war with how young these soldiers are with nothing but grenades. These soldiers did not last long vs the other army. This picture has significance because it shows to will to fight and the issue they were dealing with sending in such young soldiers. The photographer was Howard Sochurek. He was a photrapher for LIFE during the early 1950s. He received the Robert Capa gold medal award in 1955.
