This redistribution started to affect profits of the United Fruit Company, which made US officials believe that Communism was present in Guatemala. The US wanted to overthrow the Guatemalan Government in order to prevent Communism from entering the Western Hemisphere, and to establish control over the country. Despite the violent and illegal manner by which Castillo’s government came to power, The USA recognized it and showered it with foreign aid. He returned more than 1.5 million acres to United Fruit and the country’s other big landowners. Guatemala’s experiment with democracy was over. They also believed that the Soviet Union was going to take advantage of this and spread Communism further into the West. However, Guatemala wasn’t really an attempt to spread Communism, as the Soviet Union was barely attached to Guatemala at the time.

In the early 1900’s, the US helped overthrow Panama and liberate it from Columbia in order to build the Panama Canal. During the same time period as PBSuccess, the US helped overthrow communist governments in Greece and Turkey. More recently, the US helped occupy Afghanistan until leaving last year. PBSuccess is a prime example of the US intervening with over Governments for personal gain.
