Within the novel, Frankenstein, cruelty is illustrated throughout the text. Although, in this text the idea of cruelty is defined as neglect that promotes an individual's adversities. From the author’s work, the reader is able to identify the theme of cruelty as a tool to provide the audience with a life lesson. For example, the scene where Frankenstein flees from his creation as the creature animates illustrates the idea of cruelty within the book. This cruelty of neglect to his creature ultimately continues throughout the book as he never opens up to accept his creation. From Frankenstein’s cruel actions,

Yet, the consequences of their own cruelties prove that there is no winner within life; not for the rich and educated, and not for the poor and unwanted. This contributes greatly to the work of the novel, for it develops a grim and bleak outlook, contributing to the gothic genre.

For instance, when Victor tears the creature’s soon-to-be companion apart, the creature vows to invoke revenge. He kills many people that are close to Victor in the hopes of scaring Victor into doing his bidding. This creates a strange two-sided nature of the creature. It is revealed to the readers that this is a creature that is capable of emotion and longing, very human emotions. Then, when it does not get what it wants, it turns into this more violent type of creature. This emotional complexity between the creature’s human side and it's more animalistic tendencies

For instance the many murders he carried out, killing both women and men of all ages. These acts of cruelty where committed due to  the creatures spiteful anger at both his creator and humanity as a whole. The creatures feelings of abandonment caused him to go down this dark path, he made it clear to the audience that human natures lack of care for him caused him to commit murders. The worst betrayal of all coming from his creator, Frankenstien who would not fulfill his wishes of having a female partner. These acts better serves the novel as a whole for they lead the story through its climactic moments and sets up the characters for their resolution at the end of the story.

These killing sprees can express how the creature tries to create a connection to his master Victor Frankenstein on why the creature needs a female companion and/or to have a fellow companion such as Victor to teach and raise. Though the rise of cruelty that the creature has brought to his own master did create an understand to Victor on how alone feeling like from the beginning and very end of the novel.

However, when his creature comes to fruition, he cowardly runs away out of fear of his duty as a creator. Thus, revealing the lack of responsibility Frankenstein holds to project control on his own life. The fight or flight instinct to avoid his situation acts as a means of escape to withhold his feelings. Rarely does Frankenstein have emotions take over his logic, being persuaded by the rejection of science in his household to have logic serve superior over all. By siding with logic, him being in tune with his true emotions and empathy for others contains a void unable to be comprehended. Effectively, he extorts control on improving his knowledge of the world, but not his mental state or relationships.

In this case, the perpetrator would be Victor and his cruelty towards the creature that he created was to forget about the “monster” that he created. His cruelty continues with not wanting to help out the creature, and not building what he requested. He does so in the hopes of dealing with his problem of having created a “monster” and of protecting the world from his creation. The victim uses cruelty to deal with his inability to connect with humans. The creature, upon breathing fresh air into his now-breathing lungs to fuel his now-beating heart, was greeted not with a smile and ecstatic cheer by his creator, but instead with terror and abandonment. The abandonment of this creature signifies as the first act of cruelty within the book, as the creature was then left to wander the world in search for compassion, love, and survival, completely solitary. The second act of cruelty is performed by those whose gazes fall upon the creature, whose mouths contort into a scream of terror or grimace of violence and anger. Upon seeing this creature, who was left to wander the Earth by his neglectful creator, the villagers and people who saw him would run him out of town, pelting his retreating back with stones, or by brutally beating him with either fists, feet, or other means of violence. The creature was rejected simply because of his deformity and towering figure, and as a result of being born ugly, was shown the ugly side of humanity through a storm of fear and violence. This rejection is the 2nd act of cruelty which eventually drives the creature to a 3rd act of cruelty, in retaliation to the events which conspired against him: murder. After being rejected and beaten by a French family who the creature had grown gentle feelings for, he begins to lose hope in humanity. When wandering the streets of a town, he comes across the child relative of his creator, and strangles him before framing a family friend for the murder, which she gets executed for. The creature does this out of vengeance, to retaliate against Frankenstein’s cruel act of abandoning him and cursing him with little knowledge of the world, and to retaliate against humanity as a whole, who taught him their violent, scared, and angry side of them.

The creature is seen as a hideous monster who was abandon by its creator, Victor Frankenstein in an effort to not face the event he believed to be a mistake. In a result, this loneliness and rejection the creature suffered from created a longing for acceptance and companionship within the human society. Even though the creature was abandoned at "birth" by his own creator he still wanted acceptance and felt the need to help, and the readers can see this when the creature helped the cottagers gather wood and when he tried to save the woman from drowning. This selfless actions granted him with more suffering with resulting in the creature getting shot for trying to help the woman and getting chased away when we tried to interact with  the cottagers. These cruel actions taken upon the creature show that the creature wanted companionship and acceptance, and it did not matter how many times he was shunned away. Every time he was looked down upon, the creature did a good deed without even thinking about it. When he was abandoned he tried to talk to people, when he was chased away he hid and helped cottagers find wood, when he reveled himself he was shunned away again, as he was in the wood he tried to help a woman from drowning which resulted in him getting shot. All these actions the creature did after being seen in a negative light by the humans showed the selflessness he had even at negative times. As he is consumed in his work and does not take into consideration what he will do once the being is alive. Once his creation comes to life he leaves in hopes of never seeing him again. This fear and anxiety can be seen in the novel when he arrives to his apartment hoping that the creature will leave. Throughout the duration of the novel, he spends his days avoiding any contact with the creature because he marred his own creation. Shelley mentions words of countenance and melancholy to further explain the fear that Victor felt as he traveled. Because of this fear, Victor essentially neglects to care for and raise his creature properly. The creature had to observe the daily routines of cottagers to learn how to correctly live. He did not have any guidance from his creator. Victor’s deed of neglection reveals that the creature suffered greatly living without a companion to guide him. It justifies why the creature feels alone and why he wants Victor to create a female. The loneliness that the creature feels is because of the failure that

Through certain acts that were cruel, such as the murders, being alone in an unknown world and unnaturally creating life, it emphasizes the characters’ complexity by causing the reader to feel empathy for both Victor and the creature. The creature suffered through the cruel acts of rejection by the society due to his eccentric appearance which led him to commit cruel acts himself.

The result of the creature not having anyone and being neglected by the real world, when it aspired to be accepted, taught, and loved, were the deaths of some innocent people. These acts of cruelty happened way before the creature murdered anyone though, it all began and rooted to his creation. Not knowing what to do the creature ran away after it was created, but his creator had no intention to even try to look for him, and was even trying to hide from his creation as he quickly regretted it. Running away from his “problem” he created was evident throughout the novel and demonstrated that Victor had no courage to claim what was his as he was not proud of what he had done. This led the creature to feel neglected and angered him, therefore leading to the deaths.
