The popular rock band, The Tragically Hip were known for writing songs on true events such as 38 Years Old, Fireworks, Bobcaygeon, Three Pistols and many more. The most iconic sound in Wheat Kings is the echo of loons calling over a lake. From then, the narrative begins with one of the worst injustices in Canadian legal history, David Milgaard. The band has an ability to balance the eerie lyrics with nice, almost peaceful music, and of Downie's fixation with the worst events in Canadian history. Wheat Kings is a song that many Canadians have undoubtedly sang over the campfire, but after learning the real story behind it, it will never sound the same. This article explains the process in writing, the meaning and the overall story of how inspiration became one of their most profound sounds.
