It was named after the Russian word "fellow traveler". 
It circled the Earth once every hour and 36 minutes, traveling 18,000 miles an hour. Its purpose was to "transmit radio signals back to Earth strong enough to be picked up by amateur radio operators. Its function was also to place a radio transmitter into orbit around the Earth."

The Soviets made the Sputnik to show that they were more powerful than the U.S. Even though the Soviets made the first move to space the U.S did not give up and launched Apollo 11 and ended up having the first astronauts on the moon. The Soviets and the U.S would always one-up each other and make their last invention better. It was about who had the best technology, showing power in spaceflight. It showed the world which country had the best technology, science, and economic system. It began in 1957 and ended on July 17, 1975.
The Soviet Union was so successful in the launch of the Sputnik, that the U.S was fearing they fell behind in the development of new technology.
The Soviet space program did a lot of other firsts in space. They did the first man in space, the first woman, the first to impact Venus, the first craft to soft-land on the moon, etc. 
The U.S and the Soviet Union kept doing bigger and better things than the other.

It also made each nation improve on its technology. The technology we have now is much bigger and better than back in the 50 and 60s.
