By the lyrics and the music video of the song, "When You Love Someone", it is clear that James TW uses pathos, ethos, and logos when getting his point across that sometimes parents divorcing can be for the better. He also makes it known that along the way there will be rough days and that they're necessary as well. James TW makes this happen by having different scenarios people can relate to in hard times like parents splitting up.

Ethos Appeal

In the song "When You Love Someone", ethos was the most common throughout it. James TW uses ethos as the parents talking to the son through the time period that they were getting a divorce. They use it when they are being hard on him in the beginning, as if they don't understand what the boys emotions on the situation are.
The first 6 lines of the song state, "Come home early after class/ Don't be hanging 'round the back of the schoolyard/I've been called up by your teacher/ She says she can't even reach you 'cause you're so far/You've been talking with your fist, we didn't raise you up like this." These first 6 lines use ethos by showing us moral character of the parents. Moral character is a big part of ethos and makes it out to be that the parents want to persuade the son that it isn't their fault for the way he has been acting. The parents are talking to him about how his teacher has noticed he is even acting strange. They seem to want to try and understand although they seem to blame it on him, saying that this is not how they raised him.
The parents also use ethos when they say in line 17, "Yeah you'll understand/ When you love someone." They're trying to have their son have a sort of credibility towards them by saying he will eventually understand and right now he doesn't. In line 16 it states, "Some things you can't tell your sister/ 'cause she's still too young." This is another example of ethos as the parents expect their son not to tell his sister what is happening with his parents splitting up. The parents believe that it is best to keep it from her and not let her know the problems that are going on because she is too young. This causes more stress on the boy as he has to pretend like everything is okay and keep it hidden from his sister.

Pathos is also used in the lyrics and music video of "When You Love Someone". There are many different emotions in this song and depending on what you have experienced in your life, you may be able to relate to them. Some of the emotions in the song some people may not understand completely because not everyone can relate to them in the way the audience can. To get the true meaning of the song across, James TW has an emotional pain within his voice that really gives us more of a feel for the meaning of the song.
An example of pathos in this song is in line 36 when it is stated, "And if we're crying on the couch/ Don't let it freak you out/This has been so hard." This gives us a feel of the emotions the family is going through and surrounded by. The parents are telling their son that if he sees them crying to not let it get to him and for him to understand things have been hard lately. This shows us the negative emotions the parents are feeling and what the son has to watch them struggle with. They rely on their son to understand and are open to him about how hard it really is going through a divorce.

It is a song that they can relate their thoughts and emotions to.

Purpose: The purpose of this song is to tell people who are going through family hardships that everything is going to be alright and that they'll eventually understand why everything happened the way it did.

Speaker: The speaker is the parents of the boy. I think just listening to the song it would come off as a sad or depressing song, and while watching the music video it also gives a sad and tense feeling to it. Once you listen to the words and hear what the purpose of them are, it can be seen as more hopeful and assuring.

Overall, James TW does a great job expressing many different types of feelings in this song. In the music video and the lyrics, I am able to point out how he used all three rhetorical appeals. By using pathos, ethos, and logos, it allows many people to be able to relate to this song and music video. The video along with the lyrics reinforce each other and make it so whoever is watching it can really have a feel for what is happening in this song. James TW was very effective in convincing his audience that sometimes it is for the best when it comes to parents getting a divorce.

Logos Appeal

James TW also uses logos throughout the song in a few different ways. In lines 14-15 he states, "Sometimes moms and dads fall out of love/ Sometimes two homes are better than one." By these statements, it tells us the fact of how people can fall out of love and can't gain the connection back. It also tells us that having two homes to go to when seeing both parents might have a benefit to it.
Another example of logos in the song is, "There ain't no one here to blame/ Nothing's going to change with your old friends/ Your room will stay the same/ 'Cause you'll only be away on the weekends." The parents are trying to get across to their son that going through a divorce is a common thing for many and also a situation no one should be blamed for as they only are doing what they think is best for everyone. They are letting him know that they're going to try and keep things as normal as possible and he will still have his old room and friends. Although his surroundings will be different around his house, they will most likely be better and away from the arguing and unhappiness his parents took out around the house. Friendships also would most likely grow stronger from the support they would be giving him in this hard time. In lines 25-27 it states, "It don't make sense/ It don't add up/ We'll always love you no matter what." These are very logical lines as not many kids will understand why their parents are divorcing and they don't think it makes sense. Also it is seen as very logical with the parents saying they will always love him no matter what, which is true as just because the parents fall out of love doesn't mean that they would ever lose their love for their children.
