The film, Vertigo (Alfred Hitchcock, 1958) portrays many strong statements regarding desire and love. The audience is first introduced to John “Scottie” Ferguson, a former detective who has a fear of heights. He has a fear of heights, because of an incident that occured while pursuing a criminal on a rooftop. Later on, Scottie is asked by an acquaintance, Gavin, to follow his wife Madeleine. Gavin has suspicions that she may be possessed by the ghost of her great-grandmother, who is giving Madeleine suicidal behaviors. Scottie first sees Madeline in a restaurant and notices her extreme beauty. The audience may argue that this is where Scottie gets a strong sense of desire to follow through with Gavin’s favor. Scottie follows Madeleine for a few days when he is finally led to the San Francisco Bay where Madeleine throws herself into the water. Scottie saves Madeleine from the water and takes her back to the apartment. Madeleine becomes extremely grateful and returns the next day to his apartment, when Scottie suggests they should spend the day together. You can also argue here, that this is where Scottie begins to fall in love with Madeleine and desires to be with her all the time. When he is first asked to follow Madeleine by Gavin, he is a little skeptical about getting back into that line of work again. However, this is where the signs of love and desire become more evident in the scene where they have their dramatic first kiss. Actually, they become madly in love. So much so that Scottie will do anything possible to help Madeleine overcome her suicidal thoughts. After Madeleine fakes her death with the help of Gavin, Scottie falls into a depression. However, while walking in the streets, Scottie finds a woman who reminds him of Madeleine. The woman, who goes by Judy, reminds Scottie so much of Madeleine that he asks her to dye her hair blonde, and even asks her to wear the same grey suit. His desire and love begins to become a little overwhelming. Scottie figures out after all that Judy is Madeleine. Scottie’s love and desire for Madeleine would ultimately lead to the demise of Madeleine.
