* The most absorbent nappy type.
* Excellent containment of runny newborn poo!
* Use vest extenders and size up clothing if needed.
* Boosters can be removed to make the nappy slimmer when baby is very small.
* Slow drying. Assume approximately 24hrs on an airer.
* Two part nappies are ideal night nappies, from around 6w - potty training. Bear in mind young babies may still need an additional late-night change up until around 3-4 months, depending on how much they are feeding overnight.

Before You Begin

Before you begin using the cloth nappy kit I recommend the following.

. Read the Cloth Nappy Information Padlet to find out more about the nappies and how to use them.

. Take all of the nappies out of the bag and lay them all out. Look at each nappy taking note of its features, work out what type of nappy it is and what materials it uses for absorbancy.

. Prepare the nappies for a wash, fasten up Velcro and remove boosters. I recommend washing using your own detergent prior to using the nappies as it will be a familiar detergent to your babies skin. Between hires the kit is thoroughly washed with Ariel Bio detergent and a scoop of Mio Fresh.

.Take your time putting the nappies back together matching the correct booster to the each nappy. The inventory in the manual may help with this.

How to Fit a Cloth Nappy

Here are a few easy steps on how to get a good fit:

Prepare the nappy correctly. Screwed up inserts are going to make it hard to put a nappy on and be uncomfortable. Front rise snaps can be prepared now but may need adjustment when the nappy is being put on. Remember to put a fleece liner on top next to babies skin.
Place the nappy under baby with the waistband level with baby's hips. Unlike disposables, cloth nappies have to be low at the back.
Bring the front of the nappy through the legs slightly folding it so it brings the leg elastics into the knicker line. Making sure the nappy is snug in the knicker line is really important, the nappy will leak and baby will become sore if it's not correct.
Place the front of the nappy flat against baby's tummy and around the sides. This will be as high as the belly button.
While holding the front of the nappy in place pull each waist tab upwards and across to fix it in place. Not straight across, you want it to curve up and around baby's thigh. Ensure you can comfortably slide a finger around the waistband to give baby room. A small gap is fine.
If you have a nappy with two row of snaps around the waist you will need to snap the bottom ones in place first because these will be the ones adjusting the tightness around baby's legs.
This is a great time to check the rise of the nappy if it has rise snaps. The rise snaps are what makes the nappy bigger and smaller; it adjusts the length of the nappy and how tight is it around the legs. If the nappy looks too tight or you can't comfortably run a finger all around the leg elastic, then the rise is too small. If there are gaps or you find leaks around the leg then the nappy needs to go smaller. Try to keep the rise poppers neatly snapped without bulging or bunching in the knicker line.
If you're using a two part system, you follow the same steps where applicable with the outer wrap. The rise and waist fastenings may be on a larger setting if you have a fitted nappy rather than inserts as the absorbent layer.
Once everything is in place check there is no inner fabric showing, this will cause wicking if there is.

About Flat Nappies

* Flat Nappies are the cheapest nappy system, all you need is a set of flats, some wraps, liners and wetbag meaning your whole set could cost under £100.
* Prefolds can be used padfolded or wrapped around baby using the Angel wing fold, & secured with a nippa.
* Prefolds can be padfolded, or more commonly wrapped in a range of folds and secured with a nippa; a wrap/cover is then secured over it.
* Place a fleece liner on top to keep baby's bum feeling dry.
* Rolling the leg edges into a cuff helps prevent poonamis and improves fit.

How to Use a Nappy Nippa

Nappy Nippas are used as a no pin method of fastening Flat Nappies and Muslins.

Secure the left and right sides first, ensuring a good stretch, and then pull down to secure the bottom grip.

*NB: The correct position should look like a capital 'Y' and not a 'T' shape.

* Fold the prefold at right-angles to the lines (the thicker strip in the middle). Fold over 3 or 4 times.
* Slip the folded prefold under the flaps in the wrap. On smaller rise settings, you may also need to fold down the front of the prefold to fit.
* Top with a fleece liner to keep skin feeling dry and help prevent stains.

Tips for Boosting

* Little Lambs boosters can be added to almost any nappy to extend the wear (time between changes).
* Newborn all-in-ones often aren't suitable for boosting, as it makes them too bulky.
* Note: with very young babies (< 1 mo) changing every 1.5 - 2 hours is normal; aim for 2- 2.5 hrs by 6-8w.
* Can be folded over and placed at the front for a boy, or towards the back for a girl.
* Can be added inside Close Pop-in under the insert.

How to Use

Store the wipes dry in the tub.
When you are ready to change your baby wet the required number of wipes under warm water.
Once used put into wetbag along with soiled nappy.
Wash with your usual nappy wash, 60 degrees is preferable.
Wipes can be air dried or in the tumble dryer.

Washable Wipes Tips

If you would like to clean with more than water you could use a mild and gentle liquid soap solution or herbal teas like Chamomile.
Use the spray bottle or pre-dampen when you are out of the house or do not have access to a tap.
If you are going out, store your clean wipes in a small wet bag.
Customise the wipe to the job in hand, smaller wipes for a quick once over and bigger wipes for bigger clean up jobs.
If you are weaning your child you may want separate wipes for faces, one way to do this is have white for faces, coloured for bums or vice versa.
If a wipe has been used for hands and faces they can go in your normal wash load for clothes.

The kit has a series of options for night time wear.

Two part nappies are the most absorbant option, especially the night time specific nappies like the Tjs and Ecopipo Nights. They use materials like hemp and bamboo which are very absorbant and able to hold a large volume of fluid for a long time, teamed up with a wrap you have a very absorbant and leak proof nappy.

You can also add additional boosters to increase the absorbancy of the nappies.

Here are some suggested options.

* Bells Bumz Hemp Fitted + wrap
* TJs Nights (hemp) + wrap.
* Ecopipo Night (bamboo) + wrap.
* Little Lambs (bamboo) + wrap.
* Ellas House Bumhugger (hemp) + wrap
* Close Pop in with the Pop in night booster.
* Any AIO/Pocket with bamboo/hemp and add the Hemp Little Weeds booster.

Increasing Absorbancy at Night

If you put too many boosters inside a nappy it can make it gape at the legs and could cause leaks.

If you are using a two part nappy a way around this is to put one extra booster inside the nappy and one on the outside in between the nappy and the wrap. This is a good idea because being the last layer of absorbency it can act as a test to see how many layers you need, if it is very wet when taking the nappy off you may need more absorbancy, if it is slightly wet then you probably have the right level of absorbancy and if it is dry or only mildly damp then you can probably take it out.

Getting the right combination can sometimes be a case of trial and error, I find it is better to go for over boosting with Hemp and Bamboo initially and removing layers than under boosting and having a soggy baby and having to change sheets in the middle of the night.
