Modern world, grotesque hell created by modern industry (Factories) which has polluted America. This can be seen through the quote, "ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens; where ashes take forms of houses and chimney's..." It symbolizes the spiritual desolation created by a money hungry society. A world whose inhabitants are so spiritually lost, that they worship money and wealth. This can be preserved through the quotes, " half way between West Egg and New York" showing segregation between different classes. Furthermore, it highlights the promise of happiness, hope and freedom that America gave its first settlers (American Dream) have been corrupted by the lies of greed and the emptiness of a dream.

The billboard serves as a reminder of God's watchful eyes, with a faded appearance, suggesting that the characters are no longer concerned with the consequences of their actions.

The eyes of Doctor TG Eckleburg have a profound and significant presence in the book. "Over the ashheaps the giant eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg kept their vigil but I perceived, after a moment, that other eyes were regarding us with peculiar intensity from less than twenty feet away," are the few of the lines that Nick Carraway uses to describe the famous pair of blue eyes. This particular symbol holds substantial vitality in the book because they are a physical manifestation of spiritual and ethereal belief. Contextually speaking, the Roaring Twenties were a time of wild abandon, loose morals, and reckless behaviour. And this was encouraged by the absence of the connection people maintain to spirituality. The eyes are meant to represent a higher being - perhaps god - with his watchful gaze. They are perhaps the only external motivator for the characters to even consider the morality of their careless actions, in this time where they can't differentiate between good and bad.

Literally, The Green Light is a beam to alert boaters that there is an obstacle they need to avoid, However for Gatsby the light symbolises a dream, his dream of obtaining Daisy. In broader terms it also symbolises the 'American Dream' as the colour green symbolises money which is significant to the American Dream.

(Chapter 5) "If it wasn't for the mist he could see your home across the bay" said Gatsby "you always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock"

The mist is meant to symbolise Tom and "you could see her home" is meant to symbolise Daisy. Tom is what prevents Gatsby and Daisy to properly be together, therefore he cannot "see" her clearly; in other words be with her fully.
The green light that always burns at the end of Gatsby's dock is meant to symbolise the parties that Gatsby throws to capture Daisy's attention, they burn all night as the parties last all night long.

" you always have a green light at the end of your dock "
"Gatsby believed in the green light "
when reading the book you already understand that the green light has some sort of significance because of its location on Daisy's dock. However when you read further you understand that the light contains a great deal of symbolism. the light can symbolise Gatsby's optimism, and is hope to one day get Daisy to fall in love with him again, this is furthermore implemented when you can see Gatsby reaching for the light almost like he is trying to grasp, but it sadly slipping from his fingertips, this can show how Gatsby reaches for Daisy but she ends up eventually slipping from his fingertips. Also the color of the light can symbolise greed, because it is green, and green is the color of envy and greed, this is exemplified in the story because he envies Tom and the life that he lives with Daisy, Also Gatsby shows greed, because he wants to take Daisy from her husband and her daughter.
This links to the american dream because it shows how people are constantly reaching for the american dream and strive to live it, but it can never be grasped and are never fully satisfied. For example with Gatsby, he has money and can buy what ever he wants, but he will not be happy or fully satisfied until Daisy is his.

Jay Gatsby's West Egg mansion represents the grandness and emptiness of the 1920's boom: Gatsby justifies living in the mansion all alone by filling the house weekly with "celebrated people". This is represented in the following quote, "The one on my right was a colossal affair by any standard- it was a factual imitation of some Hotel de ville in Normandy, with a tower on one side, spanking new under a thin beard of raw ivy, a marble swimming pool and more than forty acres of lawn and garden". The above quote is narrated by Nick Carraway who describes the exterior of Gatsby's mansion. Nick lives in a so called "shack" so is amused by the ostentatiousness of the mansion. The house is the physical symbol of Gatsby's love for Daisy. Gatsby used his "new money" (that he earned from criminal activities) to create a place that he thought rivaled all of the houses in "old money" East Egg that had taken Daisy away.

Relates to the American Dream as a vast amount of the American Dream consists of obtaining wealth and status which both can be obtained as they are symbolized in the color green.

Also sources Gatsby's jealousy for the fact that he could not obtain Daisy from Tom and make her admit that she never had feelings for Tom which she surely cannot do and that triggers Jay and results In his ambitions recognized to be to vast resulting in his thoughts to dim just as the green light

This symbolizes that that farm is actually similar to hell or the underworld where everything is negative and grotesque. This is also shown in the title "The Valley of Ashes" as it is similar to a popular phrase/name for hell, which is "The Valley of Death".

It was an opportunity for individuals having the rights to achieving their potential. The green light symbolizes Gatsby's hopes and dreams for the future. As mentioned before the green light is associated with the corrupt "American Dream" similar to his love for Daisy.

Quote: ""The one on my right was a colossal affair by any standard- it was a factual imitation of some hotel de ville in Normandy, with a tower on one side, spanking new under on a thin bread of raw ivy, and a marble swimming pool and more than forty acres of lawn and garden' - Chapter 1
Explanation:
His mansion is a facade that Gatsby hides behind- his is truly lonely and uses his house to welcome high status and respect in West Egg. The grand representation acts as a physical representation of the love that he holds for Daisy, an extravagant symbol.
This further links back to the American Dream and how owning the most expensive house and living a luxurious life was the best form of acceptance in the roaring twenties.

"If it wasn't for the mist we could see your home across the boy". said Great Gatsby. This tells us how Gatsby could see the house and figure out how much power or potential Tom has. "You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock" (chapter 5). This tells how Gatsby has an eye on the money as the green light represents the money and the 'American Dream' with that he also has an eye on Daisy mainly and because of his eye on Daisy he is observing Tom and his wealth. Because of Daisy, the green light represents Gatsby getting jealous over Daisy.
