Is it that strange to prefer having memories instead of material things? To choose a single moment of happiness over a whole life possession?

Well it shouldn’t be like this, and that’s consumerism’s fault. We live in a society that doesn’t force us to buy certain amounts of things, but who makes us unconsciously take a decision. By seeing advertisements or listening famous people talking about some products, in our mind is formed the idea of needing those products, even if it isn’t so.

Of course you could say that owning something gives you satisfaction and a long-term state of happiness, but I wouldn’t agree with you. 

Let’s make the example of a concert of your favorite band or singer: the days before you’re so excited that you can’t think about anything else, when you arrive there you can’t even believe that’s going to happen and finally when they play your favorite song you feel an explosion of emotions, and you would always stay  there. This is an experience you would remember forever and every time you’d think about it, you’d just have great feelings. What I’m saying is that also experiences long-last in our life, the only difference is that they’re intangible.

It’s true that experiences can be very expensive (especially if we talk about big trips) and that some people prefer to buy a CD they could listen to anytime instead of concerts’ tickets; but life is short, and we have to fill it with experiences we will remember forever. Choosing an experience over a possession could also be watching a movie at the cinema instead of doing it on your tv at home, you don’t believe me? Try it! You will remember that movie in a better way and when you’ll think about it, you’ll feel different feelings.

Am I saying that experiences are always better than possessions? Of course not, but most of the times.
