I took this picture while I was visiting my family in Metlakatla, AK. This island has rocky beaches with ice cold water, but it feels good in the warm, summer air. I provided this photo because it shows the peace of this island. Nothing but water and blue skies. I thought it was important to show the serenity side of Southeast Alaska because in my paper I focus on the terrible things that the Natives have been through in the past. These are my four cousins. Starting from the left Pamela, Zeke, Chloe and Ross.

I mentioned family in my paper quite a few different times and the importance of it to Alaskan Natives. I am very thankful for my large, supportive family. This is just a small portion of my cousins a couple Christmas' ago at my Auntie's house. The importance of having the family involved with the healing process of alcoholism is important because Alaskan Natives are the least likely to attend AA (Alcohol Anonymous) (Hesselbrock, 2001). In this photo the ages range from 22 to 6 years old.
This photo was taken by my Mom.

I wanted to provide this video clip of a ceremony done at a Native American Youth Seminar. Every day we would hold ceremonies and perform different songs and dances celebrating our people's ways. We take pride of our ancestors and what we believe in because Native people had to force themselves to change their culture and values with the white society (French, Laurence 1980). These ethnocentric people destroyed the land of the Native's and stripped away their traditions making them confused and angry which some resulted to alcohol to cope the pain. I am a young Alaskan Native American woman and I will show my traditions and beliefs because I am proud of who I am.

This is a picture of three different types of oars fishermen could use. This goes along with the technique #2- fishing. Handcrafting your own tools can be rewarding because you use them. Instead of going on a commercial boat/ motorboat go and row out on the water to discuss the alcohol issues. The victim will be in a peaceful, quite boat while discussing how to stop drinking.

This photo is another example of a tradition of the Alaskan Native people, carving. My cousin Leslie Brendible made this butterfly box for my older sister when she graduated from college. A tradition in our culture is determining what clan you are. In my tribe (Tsimpshian) we go after our Mother. My mom is non-Native so therefore we are considered a Butterfly or Addabeesh. A parent that is non-Native is always considered a Butterfly. My dad is a Raven or Gunhada, so my siblings and I can never be one, but we could get accepted into a different clan such as the Eagle or Lachsgeek, the Wolf, or Lachgeebuu; and the Killer Whale, or Gisbuutwada. I am going more in depth with traditions on the picture show because in my paper I simply just state the many traditions Alaskan Natives have.

This mask is an example of a tradition in the Alaskan Native culture. I am using this hand crafted mask as an example how this culture is a sub-culture. Sub cultures are smaller groups of people within the larger culture and in this case the United States. This mask was hand-crafted by Kevin Horne. The hair is beaver, the eyebrows are made out of copper, the eyes are a stone and the face is made out of cedar wood. This mask can be used for dances and story telling. The Alaskan Native culture is rich with tradition and remembering where we came from.

Here is a photo of the clinic in Metlakatla, Alaska. This building has the dental care, medical care and downstairs they service behavioral health; including drug, alcohol and mental health. This clinic has only been running for about six years. The Annette Island Service Unit provides primary health services at our outpatient facility in Metlakatla through funding from the Indian Health Service (IHS). IHS is something I mentioned in my paper. This organization, Indian Health Service, and is the principal provider of health services to Native Alaskans (Kraus, 1979). In other states many people would go to different hospitals for dental care vs medical care. In Metlakatla and many other islands in Southeast Alaska there is only one place.
This photo was taken by my Aunt Amy.

This research paper really hit home base for myself. I am Alaskan Native and I am Tsimshian. I wanted to write a paper that I can connect with and have an interest on finding more information on. I know that Natives struggle with alcohol, but really finding out information on how people can treat this is important. Doing this research paper I learned quite a bit more on Native statistics. I had no idea that we are the least likely to attend AA meetings. I think that's important to understand because if that kind of treatment isn't effective doctors need to start thinking out of the box and focus on the culture of the people. I absolutely love doing research on topics I care about. I chose this photo to write my purpose because the rainbow can symbolize happiness, new beginnings, the heavens and so much more. As time goes on I hope treating alcoholism can be more effective and culturally appropriate.
This photo was taken by my cousin, Angie.

As I mentioned in the paper, fishing is a common thing to do in Alaska. This could be a coping mechanism to stop the urges to drink alcohol. Talking about one's problems to another person could help. Many alcoholics have under lying issues. This sounds like AA, but it involves an activity. Plus, if the person does catch some fish that is a reward. Here is a photo sent it by the cousin Angie of the docks in Metlakatla, AK.

This photo shows what most of the villages look like. Run down, but beautiful scenery. Float planes are used for different reasons in Alaska. In my paper I mentioned as a different technique for handling alcoholism is creating an environment away from the village and include the entire family in this exercise (Seale, 2006). This shows the victim and the family may have different transportation opportunities; boat, plane or car.
This photo was taken by my Aunt Amy.

I will focus on how people can treat alcoholism and looking at somehow bettering the communities. This picture illustrates the beauty of Southeast Alaska. All of my scenery come from Metlakatla, Alaska because that is where my family is from. However, nearby villages like Ketchikan, Hydaburg, or Craig have similar looks.
This photo was taken by my cousin, Angie.

Enjoying nature and going on hikes or nature walks can benefit people in so many different ways. Breathing fresh air, getting off the couch, doing something that is beneficial. Also, the victim can enjoy this with his/her family. This is a great time for bonding and remembering the importance of people.
This photo was taken by my cousin, Angie.
