         <title>Facebook</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In its early years, Facebook consisted entirely of college students. Unlike contemporaries Friendster and MySpace, which exhausted themselves to acquire as many users as possible from all ends of the Earth, Facebook operated more like a “secret society”, going so far as to require .edu e-mail addresses in order to join. And many of their users liked it that way, preferring Facebook’s exclusivity to the “the more the merrier” approach of other social networks.<br><br></div><div>The problem was that Facebook could only expand so much by catering to only college students. So despite much protest and uproar, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg decided to open Facebook to high school students in 2005. By 2006, the service had opened to anyone 13 years or older with a valid e-mail address. By and large, the strategy change has worked. A 2009 study by Compete.com found Facebook to be the most popular social network in terms if unique views and monthly visits.<br><br></div><div>If facebook did not go ahead with this change the company would not be making the substantial profit it is today <br><br>Julia Millar<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>Nokia</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In the late 90's and early 2000's Nokia were a global leader in telecommunication networks and mobile phone devices. <br><br>However with the global rise in the internet, the organisation failed to remain innovative and embrace the technological changes in communication, from voice networks to data. <br>During this period of technological change, Nokia decided to continue development within mobile phone hardware but failed to change their focus towards software development. This ultimately lead to poor user experiences with their brand and consumers began to focus more on new market competitors, like Apple and Samsung. Whose organisational goal was user experience/ease of use. They focused on the needs and wants of consumer, while introducing innovative ways to harness technological changes.  <br>Nokia's resistance to changes in the socioeconomic and technological changes in the mid 2000's meant they had fallen behind their competitors and by the time they eventually decided to adopt the change to a smartphone system it was already too late, as their products weren't competitive enough.<br><br>Bradley Volpe</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Nokia was a company founded in Finland, and they were the first ones to create a cellular network in the world. Nokia was a global leader in mobile phones. With new technological development in the internet, other mobile companies started to understand how data and not voice was the future of communication. Nokia failed to grasp the concept of software and they kept focusing on hardware, because management feared that users will be alienated by the change.  By Nokia not leading the change in user experience, they developed systems that was not fit for the market.  Apple launched the iPhone in 2007. When Nokia made a decision to compete with Apple in 2008, they has products that could not compete, or was not competitive enough.  <br>Sonja Kruger</div>]]></description>

         <title>What happened to Friendster?</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><br>Friendster was once a big social networking service. The service allowed users to contact other members, maintain those contacts, share content and media and discover events, music and hobbies. At its peak it had over 115 million registered users.<br>They tried to transform the service into a gaming site and this only made things worse for the people that wanted to use it as a social network. Friendster got it wrong and as big as they were they are now defunct.</div><div> On June 14, 2015 Friendster released the follow message to it members and the rest of the world:</div><div>"Friendster is Taking A Break".<br>My point going over the closing of Friendster is that people that used it lost the content that they had placed there. When Friendster tried to transform into a gaming site this changed the conditions for users in ways that were significant. Friendster made this change without consulting their user community. For people that used Friendster as their center of content they were flat out of luck.<br><br></div><div><br> <br><br></div><div><br>That’s too bad.<br><br>If you develop your very own center of content which I define as your website and/or blog then <strong><em>you are in control</em></strong>. You define the content and how it is presented. If something is deleted then you were the one making the decision. Friendster was big and innovative. They failed. This resulted in the efforts of many people also failing.<br><br></div><div><br>Key Advice<br><br></div><ol><li>Don’t develop significant content only on a social media platform.</li><li>Develop your center of content (website and blog) with delightful, engaging and shareable content.</li><li>Use social media to gain exposure for your center of content.</li></ol><div><br>Take control of your content by publishing at your center of content. You will not be at the whims of management in some far off place who are not even giving a thought to you or your business. Use social media with your eyes wide open and with care.<br><br></div><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Samsung has been in business since the 1st of March but didn't produce their first phone until 1988 this was the beginning over a new error for Samsung.<br>In June 2010 they produced their first galaxy.          <description><![CDATA[<div>David Cook founded blockbuster in 1985.          <description><![CDATA[<div>During the height of McQueens career he was designing for many labels but by far his most prosperous endeavour was his own fashion house. His shows were known for their drama, excitement and theatrical experiences. However in 2010 he died and since then Sarah Burton has taken the reins. The label is still very well known, considered high end and is very expensive but its lost its excitement. Other than a brief time after McQueen died the house has seen a major decline in sales, attendance to shows and the excitement that came with it all (hype!!). The labels best selling point currently is its history, which isnt enough.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>MSN IM was a popular site where individuals could live talk over the internet. MSN was created in 1999. After 15 years, they have now retired due to Skype taking over this service. This was a successful change on Microsoft behalf as it meant they could add features such as photo sharing, video chatting and still continue to instant message. <br><br>The change cost Microsoft  $8.5bn to change, however it was an investement as it meant its users could do more with this software.<br><br>Gracie Carlyle</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Kodak, a technology company that dominated the photographic film market during most of the 20th century. The company blew its chance to lead the digital photography revolution as they were in denial for too long.<br><br></div><div><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/02/technology/02kodak.html">Steve Sasson</a>, the Kodak engineer, actually invented the first digital camera back in 1975. “But it was filmless photography, so management’s reaction was, ‘that’s cute—but don’t tell anyone about it,” says Sasson. The leaders of Kodak failed to see digital photography as a disruptive technology.<br><br></div><div>A former vice-president of Kodak <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/analysis-and-features/the-moment-it-all-went-wrong-for-kodak-6292212.html">Don Strickland</a> says: “We developed the world’s first consumer digital camera but we could not get approval to launch or sell it because of fear of the effects on the film market.” The management was so focused on the film success that they missed the digital revolution after starting it. Kodak filed for bankruptcy in 2012.          <description><![CDATA[<div>With the ageing fleet in the Interislander, when the Arahura needed replacing the choice was made to charter a non-rail ship with limited passenger capacity- 40% less than the vessel being replaced but significantly more room for Road freight.<br>This meant there was only one rail ferry left in the fleet - when this ferry goes for its biannual docking period and is taken out of service this means the rail freight, which is usual left on the wagons, rolled on and rolled off, was required to be transferred to road trailers in Wellington, then taken to a yard out of Picton and be transferred back to rail wagons. The full implications of time, cost and delay were not initially realised, causing further delay and impact on other customers.
