Nick said narration may be swayed as Nick has a sense of pride in his own honesty that may not be so true. Yet Nick is so convinced that what he says is true that he believes anything he says is true. Nick does not fit into society the way others do for several reasons, firstly he does not fit into the lavish lifestyle that others do, he believes himself to be the only true honest person. Nick the narrator is different than Nick the character because Nick the character acts differently than how he says to be in his narration.

I believe that Nick’s narration is honest and unbiased. This is due to that fact that he hilights the good, such as Gatsby’s party, but also the bad, like how Gatsby is terribly nervous about meeting Daisy. Nick is an average person that minds his own business, but also partakes in much social interaction. An example of this is when Gatsby asks him to help with his meeting with Daisy. At first, Nick is a little reluctant, but after consideration he agrees. This hilights that Nick minds his own business, but will help when it’s needed. I believe that there are not too many differences between Nick the narrator and Nick the character.

Yet, these same judgements cannot be reliable when he talks about himself.

2. Although it seems like Nick can interact well with this society, his narration also shows the distance between him and the other people in this book. His judgements in the book point out all of the character flaws of others, while promoting none of these characteristics in himself

To be honest, I do not see too much difference between Nick the narrator and Nick the actual character. The few differences I may be able to point out is that Nick as a narrator seems to be reliable, mainly because it seems that he possess a knowledge of what events are going to occur next. Nick as a character in the actual story, however, seems to be somewhat opposite of this assured-nature he portrays for us as the narrator. I mean this in the sense that in the story, Nick does not seem to be as self-assured of the events occurring around him. And on a similar note, Nick seems to be more judegemtnal as a narrator than as a character, where he seems more free of any judgmental or emotional decisions he may have.

He lives a more moderate life than many others. Nick the narrator and Nick the character are very different because Nick the narrator is more honest and they act differently.

As narrator, Nick offers a view on events that are sometimes contradicted by his actions. These contradictions are usually small, and most only occur because Nick is trying to fit into the society he is a part of, rather than defy it like he sometimes does in his narration. Although his narration is swayed by his own opinions, Nick can be trusted as a narrator because, as readers, he is the only person we see who challenges the ideas and events around him. Although his narration may not line up with how he actually thinks or acts, the fact that he is willing to break away from the mold of society at least in his narration makes him trustworthy.

I think it is hard to rely on Nick as a narrator because he is so confident in his opinions. He always believes that what he says is the truth, so we are just limited to his perspective. He doesn’t fit in well with his society. Nick seems to have strong morals and looks on with anger at a lot of things going on with the people of West Egg, especially Tom. These people like to love lavishly and drink and party while Nick seems to be a little more laid back and normal. Nick the narrator differs from Nick the character in that Nick the narrator is not afraid to speak his mind about people and their actions, and does so quite often, while Nick the character is more laidback and less upfront when actually dealing with these people. It seems as if Nick the narrator says what Nick the character wants to say to people, but doesn’t have the motive actually say in person.

1. I can rely on Nick’s narration because it is often easy to see and pick apart what things he’s being judgemental and slanted about.
2. He fits in with society because one of the norms of the Roaring 20s was gossip and loose ideas that may or not be true. Because of this you can see what about Nick is often fitting in society.

3. Nick the narrator is often a lot judgemental and looks at things in a whole perspective and may even be less accepting because in the story, Nick often goes with the flow of things and it’s often hard to see his frustration as the character rather than when he vents about it as a narrator. For example, when Gatsby is driving him to the city, Jay knows how frustrated he is with certain things regarding his own origin and why Gatsby has become so intimate in his affairs.
eh

What I mean to say is, Nick points out the flaws of some, admittedly terrible, people several times in this book, but for much of it he goes along with these characters under the facade of a friend and is complicit in what they do, which he doesn’t feel incredibly self critical for.

Nick and the narrator have some differences as the narrator describes the events of himself. Obviously the narrator is more experienced. He is describing himself years later. He describes the events with the knowledge of what is to happen next. Nick is young and is just floating around. Nick cannot be relied on as the narrator. He is biased and although he is which to judge others, his own flaws go right over his head. Nick seems awkward in trying to fit in with others. He purposely picked a character that was dull, and he seems to stand on the side and watch events unfold as he judges everything that goes on. Nick, although uncomfortable, just goes along with what people tell him to do. The narrator describes these events as everyone else being awkward and weird while Nick is the normal one.

I cannot know what he was truly feeling in the moment , but only what he has meditated on and is retelling now. Nick is starting to fit in with society since he is now dating Jordan Baker but before that his social life was dead. He had half a relationship with Gatsby and only knew Daisy and Tome because Daisy was his cousin and Om was here husband. Nick the narrator is different from Nick the character because Nick’s narration is very judgy and condescending. He believes he holds himself to a higher estate than everyone else and he views everyone, except Gatsby, as lesser and dumber. However, Nick the character is very considerate of everyone’s actions and just goes with the flow so he can try to find where he fits in in this society.

Is he actually being truthful in his narrations though? Nick doesn’t really fit in with this society. He just returned from war and isn’t used to not having order. Everyone is just partying now and living in mansions. Nick isn’t used to this. Nick the narrator is different than Nick the character because Nick the narrator doesn’t seem as socially awkward as Nick the character.

While Nick does remain somewhat in the background of the story at its onset, he does become more and more involved in the plot as it moves forward. He does maintain his honesty and character to the best of his ability, and he serves as a foil to the moral fabric of the society of the rest of the characters in the story. Because of his opposed moral standing, he tends to present other characters in the novel (including Gatsby as he describes the set-up to his first party) as lavish and morally corrupt. He already has this pre existing idea of his society (as evidenced by his claim to be “the most honest man he ever knew” in Chapter 1), so there is the potential for this negative view to simply belong to only Nick, forcing the reader to determine for himself the true moral spectrum taking place.

Nick is an outsider in this new lavish lifestyle he has adopted, so many of the practices he sees may be abnormal. His judge mental nature also influences the narration. Some of the things he says are certainly not unbiased or objective.

I feel like as the readers, since we see every character through Nick’s point of view, it definitely influences how we think of each of character very strongly. Nick is petty different from the rest of society, as he does not seem to be type of guy to live the eccentric lifestyle that others do at this time, such as the people who attend Gatsby’s parties. Nick the narrator seems to be more judgmental than Nick he character because he does not have the same hindsight that he holds as the narrator.

I cannot rely on Nick Carraway’s narration because he has obvious character flaws. As we are introduced to him, Nick states that his father instilled in him the value of not judging other people. However, shortly after that Nick talks about judging men who have, in his mind, unoriginal problems. It is evident that Nick comes from very old money which means that he lives more comfortably than most people. However, he does not have the same wealth that Gatsby or the Buchanan’s have. In a way this leads to him being regarded as their lesser. As an audience, we view the entire story through Nick Carraway’s point of view. Due to this, there are views that Nick has that he shares with the audience. Nick Carraway, the narrator, directly affects how the audience thinks. Nick Carraway, the character, does not really have much influence on the story. Nick is not the main character or protagonist of the story. But because he is the narrator he influences the way events are told and characters are viewed.

To some Nick might be an unreliable narrator due to his relationship with Daisy, Mr. Gatsby, and Tom Buchanan. Gatsby is Nick’s noisy neighbor who wants to be set up with Nick’s cousin Daisy, when Nick is asked of such a question, this may jeopardize his role as an unbiased narrator. The way he sees Tom treat Daisy and the way he sees Gatsby love her, although Gatbsy may be behind a shady business. Each character has flaws therefore, in my opinion, leading Nick to become an unreliable narrator. Nick is a Yale graduate who moved to Long Island to work on Wall Street and have a home away from work. In society, compared to Gatsby and Buchanan, is a working class man. Gatsby and Buchanan are those who work very minimally because they either have lots of family money or have worked hard in previous years and made enough money. Nick the character seems to be a people pleaser. In the sense that whenever he is with one of the characters he agrees with them, essentially becoming the same person. When Nick is with himself, alone, is where he exposes everything that is wrong with each character after each encounter.

We are not in belief that we are receiving a fully objective account of the story, but we are hearing Nick’s experience of these events. By hearing his take on these accounts, we can more fully understand what it must have been like to have been there, since we are receiving emotions and thoughts and conjecture from a person who was there. For example, in chapter 6, we would not have learned that Gatsby’s meeting with Daisy crushed his hope for what it would be like without hearing what Nick observed.

Nick seems to be a bit of an outcast from this society because he does not qualify for membership in either egg. Nick the character plays a relatively minor role in the affairs that are taking place. He is a small fish in a big pond, being used by the people around him (whether it is as entertainment for Daisy or as an opportunity for Gatsby). This Nick is relatively mild in his opinions, and extremely polite whenever he expresses them. Nick the narrator is an incredibly different person. While he tells the objective aspect of the story fairly well, his statements are often highly opinionated. Since Nick is speaking from such a limited perspective and with such limited knowledge of the people around him, these opinions might not be true at all. Nick Carraway, the character, plays a small objective role in the story, but the narrator tells his opinions as if they are truths that can’t be denied.

We can rely on Nick objectively as a narrator. He is a very observant person who likes to keep note of all the things happening around him. However, when it comes to a subjective sense, Nick’s POV is heavily catered to how he sees society. Although he is a very smart person, his views and opinions cannot be trusted fully. This stems from his role in society. Up until chapter 4, Nick has been an insignificant character, even though he is the narrator. He plays more of a bystander role in this novel. Furthermore, nick is quite insignificant to the people he is compared to. He is surrounded by larger than life characters(Gatsby, Daisy, Tom, Myrtle). These characters drown out nick in terms of significance. Nick as a narrator plays a huge role in our perception of this novel. He controls the information that we are presented. However, when we look closer into what the actual story of the Great Gatsby is, we realize that nick the character isn’t quite as important as nick the narrator. After all, the book title is “the Great Gatsby”, not “the Great carraway.”
