At this, Stryver continues to tell Sydney that he is "a devilish ill-conditioned fellow" and that he is also "a disagreeable fellow" (Dickens 139). The reason for Stryver to be saying these things about Carton was because they were both in love with Lucy and Stryver was trying to make himself look and feel better than Sydney Carton.

Even though Carton may be very quiet in the court room, he still makes a big impact on whether or not people are set free. For example, during Darnay's case, he had "[written] a word or two on a little piece of paper, screwed it up, and tossed it to [Stryver]" (Dickens 75). After Stryver had examined what was written on the paper, there was then "great attention and curiosity" while looking at the prisoner. (Dickens 75). This shows just how effective Carton is as a lawyer.

For Sydney Carton, when he tries to approach the fact that he wants to marry Lucy, he goes blindly straight to tell her. Rather than telling Lucy's father first, like Charles Darnay, Carton just went straight forward to telling Lucy and getting rejected. This shows that Carton hasn't been raised in the best way and he is not as polite and respectful as Darnay.

Although Charles Darnay is seem as a very respectable person, there are some flaws to him. To start, he was on trial and it was almost certain that he would be sent to death because of his crimes. Even though they didn't find him guilty in the end, it still shows what kind of person Charles Darnay really can be.
