The powerpoint presentation they created was so well done! I was amazed it was only an animated slideshow as its appearance looked like a real website with functions. They also had a very multimodal performance with the usage of images, props, and actors. I think they did a great job conveying the reality of the fast fashion workers' lives and how the industry directly impacts their quality of life. The relatability of Mel's character hits home for many students in our class, including myself, and it reminded me of my role to living a more sustainable life.

Natasha

I liked how each person explored different ways people outwardly express their mental health, with the end realization being how some expressions can affect others negatively. Even everyone will have the same feeling after their performance.

group4:

I like the way they display different stages, reflecting real life and thoughts from simple dialogues. Xinrui's performance surprised me. I didn't expect that she, who is usually so shy, could perform so well and her voice was conveyed very clearly.

group5:

I really like their presentation format, one piece of colored paper has two presentation methods, but I think it would be better if they could change the presentation method! And I never thought climate issues could be so interesting to talk about.

I think the storyline is very relatable in the sense where at time one may be caught up in their own problems which leads them to be blind or ignorant about others problems. The storyline also highlights the struggles people have with mental health very well. I also enjoyed the puns that were made and I like how even on a serious matter of mental health you guys were able to make it lighthearted! I also like the idea of paper displays. With the combination of the actors' facial and body expressions and the visual impact of the paper displays, the overall presentation becomes incredibly engaging and immersive. I think it was a very creative and touching way to reflect on each of your experiences. Definitely made me reflect and make connections!

group 4 (socioeconomics): The puppet show was a super cool way to catch the audiences attention! I love that you guys thought of following a time-line journey across the students' experiences. Touching on humour and serious subjects in a way that allowed us to feel for the characters but also see the lightness of their youth.

group 5 (consumerism): i really liked the use of resources in the consumerism presentation, made us see more of the life cycle of products. Each of you shared the message in a different way which was very interesting to see!

group 6 (yellow): I found this presentation to be both informative and eye catching.

I found the simplicity of the paper notes used in your performance fascinating. I really enjoyed how your team was able to convey both the emotions that aren't easy to distinguish visually through facial or body expressions and the 'labels' we tell ourselves and others, such as "failure" and "kind", with the written visuals. Both the concept of the performance, and the props, were clear and simple, which made the presentation very accessible to understand for any audience member. I can really appreciate the planning used in the scriptwriting to allow all your team members to be casted as both actors and narrators as respected times, as well as the planning in stage direction for when and where to store the papers and tape for when they were necessary, and when and where to discard them for when they weren't.

First off, amazing concept to host a slam poetry for the class. I truly felt like I was in a speakeasy on an evening out while sitting in the audience with the staging and position of the chairs lined up for the poetry readers and with the host. I know I mentioned this in class already, but again, I really want to highlight what an incredible job Theo did with taking on that host role, engaging with every teammate as they came on and off, and helping carry that positive, welcoming energy throughout the presentation with remarks such as "Amazing job X, now let's please welcome X!". I love that you had a topic that was relatable to all your teammates (and audience members) and every one of you were able to express your creativity and unique perspective of housing inequality and unaffordability through your poetry. Again, repeating what I mentioned in class, I want to extend what a great job you all did and thank you for all being so courageous in sharing your creative writing. Poetry tends to be very personal and like a diary of our inner feelings and thoughts, and it isn't easy to be vulnerable with your peers, so I applaud you all for doing so. It was an honour to attend your poetry night!

Your presentation was thrilling to watch! Especially after what felt like forever of growing anticipation to see elements of it unfold in class during the artistic designing of socks (your little mini-me sock versions! adorable!) and production rehearsals behind tables laying on their side. Your entire script was pun-ny throughout which made it engaging and kept us audience members hanging onto every line by not wanting to miss a cute reference to the socks. Your humour wasn't just in your script though as it extended through your props and spread into physical humour. Despite not being able to see your puppets faces from the audiences' perspective, you did a fantastic job of remembering to engage your sock puppets with the other puppets on stage, and react to your teammates puppets such as: turning their body to face the speaker, nodding in agreement to other's dialogue, opening their mouth wide and rolling their entire head to shut it closed after the full rotation as to indicate an eyeroll, and my personal favourite, suddenly opening their mouth wide to indicate a GASP!

It was such a fun presentation to watch, covering a difficult interpersonal topic but in an accessible, fun, engaging and humourous manner. I can envision this presentation traveling throughout elementary schools to present to kids. Outstanding work!

- Melissa

I am shocked how smooth and effortless you made the presentation feel after discovering how cramped up you all were behind that small poster board. The popsicle stick pencil-crayon-coloured character figures peeking over the small window cut-out was very reminiscent of my childhood, but it was also the really thought-out elements such as the specific audios used as background ambience to indicate the scene switches, as well as the students' dialogue topics changing from food, to clothes, to graduation plans as time went on, that really brought me back to my own memories of my K-12 experiences. That ability to craft such specific, intentional elements helps transform the audience member not just visually and auditorily, but emotionally and viscerally into your scene, which is where the real magic happens. I especially felt connected with the dialogue topics transitioning with age-appropriate focuses and mannerisms. The values installed into the characters are realized through the character's dialogue, from an emphasis on their family unit at adolescent ("my mom tells me we need to eat our greens to grow strong"), to a shift to a societal narrative at young adulthood ("yeah, but that's not a 'real' job"). This subtle use of changing value systems and where children start engraining messages really emphasize the process of how children (and their views, and therefore their attitudes and behaviours onto others) are just creations of their surrounding environment. Very powerful message about financial inequality and how those barriers show up in our students at school, interpersonally, and as a glimpse at home. Very powerful!

- Melissa

I really didn't know what to expect with your group as I felt like it was tightly under wraps for much of the planning process. Nonetheless, I was surprised and delighted to watch your presentation on climate change. I found it really clever to have each member embody a specific continent, and from that macro lens, really narrow it down into a micro perspective of a distinctive region in order to address a specific climate concern affecting that locational area. I found the visual elements of the double-sided shiny props very entertaining. My attention is like a crow, in that it is captured by shiny objects, so with the dim lighting of the room and the soft light of the PowerPoint presentation in the background, it created a really beautiful flickering shine when the prop elements were moved around in the background. I think it also created a great interaction with the speaker and groupmates who weren't sharing as they still held a very clear purpose in narrating and building visual understanding to what was being said, which was sometimes necessary, as I found it hard to hear everything said at times due to being at the very opposite end of the classroom against the wall in the audience. Nonetheless, it was really well done, and I would love to hear it again, either sitting closer to the stage or if team members projected slightly louder to really digest all the hardwork put into your scripts. Amazing work!

- Melissa

I like how you did not focus just on a single idea and instead revealed the struggled faced throughout different stages of one's life. The development and storyline clearly showed the transitions and the idea of how things can linger and impact one for long periods of time.

Also, it was evident that your group spent a lot of time and effort into making the different characters as well as the actual scene/curtains. Whether it was designing or coloring, these props helped bring the idea to life and was very engaging to watch and follow along. This ingenious arrangement made me laugh. Their performance is like a small movie, with ups and downs of the plot, which is dizzying and really amazing!

Alice Li

The writing prowess of this group is truly amazing! Their poems are not only highly skilled, but also rhyme neatly. Every sentence is as sweet and moving as music. I am immersed in it and enjoy the beautiful melody of the language. Their works made me feel fresh and new, and I felt the charm and power of words.

Alice Li

The performance of this group is really lifelike! They used the child's growth process as a clue and incorporated the ups and downs of the show's plot into it. And they also cleverly incorporated the unique hustle and bustle of the school, as well as sounds such as the school bell, to make the whole scene more vivid. This realistic technique makes the audience feel as if they are in reality and feel the reality and richness of life. The creativity and skill of this group is truly breathtaking!

Alice Li

The Last Group

The performance of the last group was really interesting! What’s even more surprising is that they cleverly incorporated elements of the popular Shein campaign, which is even more eye-catching. They showed the entire process of a piece of clothing from growing cotton to making clothing, and then delivering it to the buyer through express delivery, vividly showing the chain of the clothing industry. This ingenious creativity is not only eye-catching, but also triggers thinking about fashion and consumption, making the audience ponder while laughing. What an amazing performance from this group!

Alice Li
