Nathaniel Hawthorne was born on July 4, 1804 in Salem, Massachusetts. Nathaniel had a harsh life growing up. Many of his ancestors were sea captains, including his father. His father died in 1808 due to yellow fever, which is thought to have pushed Hawthorn away from ever wanting to be a sea captain himself. His family was not wealthy or had the best relationships with each other either. In fact, Hawthorne's family barely had enough money to send him to college. Inevitably, Hawthorne did go to college and afterwards he began his first novel, and continued writing from there on.

In the beginning of the novel, isolation is demonstrated when Hester Prynne is obligated to wear the scarlet letter "A" on her chest for committing adultery. The puritan society is shunning her and judging her every actions, which makes her feel like an outcast. As the novel progresses, Hester Prynne is trying her best to care for her inhuman daughter, Pearl. The scarlet letter and her responsibility over her daughter, who is ultimately the reason for her punishment, distances Hester from the Puritan society.

An intense love is developed throughout the novel between the two main characters, Hester Prynne and Roger Chillingworth. The two share a relationship that grew from Hester's honesty and there devotion to each other. Dramatic irony is shared from this situation. The reader knows that Arthur Dimmesdale is Pearl's father and that Roger Chillingworth is Hester's husband, but the towns people have no idea of these things.

Society was mainly males, which was demonstrated in every sector of life. Women were not aloud to own property and could not vote. Not only did gender play a role in societal differences but so did religion. New England was primarily Christian, in which god was superior to men, while men were superior to women. Women were also hard working, and did the household labor. Puritans also participated in a theocracy in which there Christian religion and government were tied together.
