Conflict Between the Characters

Many of the characters have constant conflict between them representing conflict in the real world. For example, Lennie and Crooks have very different opinions and it is very prominent on page 68. "For a moment Crooks did not see him, but on raising his eyes he stiffened and a scowl came on his face. His hand came out from under his shirt." (Steinbeck 68). This shows Crooks expressing his anger through a micro action. This connects to the real world in the 1930's because many people/groups of people had conflict between each other and solved it through passive agressive actions instead of actually talking it out.
Amelia Hoeffler

Curley's wife, a white person, threatens Crooks who is a black stable buck. This shows the segregation of the 1930s. "I could get you strung up on a tree so easy it ain't even funny" (Steinbeck 81). Crooks is pushed around by Curley's wife and this is what would happen in the 1930s. Crooks does exercise some power over Lennie making Lennie think that George is not coming back.

Jasper Smith

'Candy lay still staring at the ceiling.' (Steinbeck 49) The previous quote is taken from when Candy, an old man, loses his elderly dog when the other characters take him outside to kill him. It seems as though the other characters treat him with little respect, and Candy even fought for his dog. However, at that point Candy has kind of given up. This is mostly due to his age, and that fact that he's barely keeping his job as is, so he has very little leverage.
Zoe Birnbaum

Lennie is definitely treated differently because of his naiveté and apparent disability. He is often disrespected and was even beaten up by Curley for just being the way he is. 'Lennie gave a cry of terror. Blood welled from his nose. "George," he cried. "Make 'um let me alone, George."' (Steinbeck 63). Curley started to hurt Lennie because he knew he could. Curley even said that the reason was he wouldn't let a big guy like Lennie laugh at him.
Zoe Birnbaum

A Pecking Order Within Crook's Room

I think there is a pecking order within Crook's room that affects the way that the characters talk and influence each other.
1. Curley's Wife - Treated with the highest amount of respect because she is the wife of the boss's son so many the other characters want to please her.
2. George - Superiority over Lennie.
3. Lennie - Charming nature.
4. Candy - Not treated with much respect because he is an old man and is not capable of doing as much work.
5. Crooks - Hardly treated with any respect because he is an old, black man.

Amelia Hoeffler

George is kind of in the middle of the "pecking order". He has control over Lennie and can make him do things. George tells of the times he had some fun with Lennie. " I turns to Lennie and sais, 'Jump in.' An' he jumps" (Steinbeck 40). This shows that Lennie will do anything that George tells him to do. Even jump in a river when he can't swim. A few people have control over him. Curley's dad definitely does because he is the boss. Curley does because he could get Lennie and George thrown off the farm. Curley's wife has power over him because she could report to Curley and get them canned.

Jasper

Explaining Why Crooks is Treated With a Lack of Respect

Besides the fact that Crooks is an old black man and he cannot do much work, there is another very important reason as to why Crooks is barely treated with any respect. In the first place, when Lennie first tried to enter Crooks' room, Crooks said no but then Lennie still entered showing his lack of respect towards Crooks. Likely, many other characters also entered eventually.

Amelia Hoeffler

Curley's Wife

Curley's wife is definitely high in the social rank on the ranch. The reason for this is that she holds a lot of power over the other character because she's married to the boss' son. This means she could have them fired, and she even threatens to kill Crooks. She can do that partly because he is black and she is white. Curley's wife has power over Lennie as well. She convinces him to go against what George said and talk with her. "Sometimes I've even pet mice, but not when I can get nothing better" (Steinbeck 90). She even has power over George in some sense. George thinks that if him or Lennie even talk to her, they will get in trouble and get canned. She kind of has the same influence over Slim as well.

jasper/Zoe
