However, modern parang has different styles and categories such as Aguinaldos or Serenales, Guarapos and Calypso have merged with parang formulating soca-parang with english lyrics which applies to North American Christmas with santa and lots of gifts. Parang has also fused with Indian druming and Chutney melodies to create a new revolution of parang.,

Soca is a current form of calypso with an up-tempo beat. Soca originated as a combination of calypso with Indian rythms. Garfield Blackman also known as lord shorty the father of Calypso soca was born on the 6th,October 1941 in Lengua, Trinidad. He began singing at the age of seven under the name lord shorty where he gained his fame with his recording of Clock and Dagger.
Lord shorty experimented with calypso rythm and combined indian rythm ( dholak, tabla, ahantal)
to create the new energetic soca. His first album was Endless Vibrations , which had an effect on many musicians to adopt the new soca style. Soca was initially known as solka represents the true soul of calypso. The name was then changed to soca by a music journalist. Although lord shorty was responsible for inventing and introducing soca music , lord kitchener was held responsible for popularizing soca across the Caribbean upon releases Sugar Bum Bum in 1978.

It now comprises topics from current events treated with mockery, ridicule and sarcasm, or with flattery or praise.
The competitive nature of extempo is reflected in the annual Trinidad Carnival with a formal competition for the title of National Extempo Monarch.
It consists of a performer improvising in song or in rhythmic speech on a given theme before an audience who themselves take turns to perform. It is inherently competitive and success is judged by the wit and ingenuity of the performance.

Female singer Drupatie released an album 'Let's Sing and Dance' in 1968 which further popularized chutney music within the East Indian Caribbean community. in 1970 chutney music had a big turning point when Moean Mohan recorded Sunder Popo with Harry Mahabir's BWIA Orchestra. Sundar Popo included guitars and early electronics into his chutney music. the art of singing chutney was then introduced by Lakhan Kariya although Popo was the king of chutney.
Sam Boodram another artist, followed Popo's lead by adding new modern instruments to chutney music.until then chutney was known as the local music of Trinidad. However, chutney music changed in 1979 when chutney became an Industry by seventeen year old Rohit Jagessar. He set a higher standard for chutney and he also globalized this type of music opening new international markets for musical genres.
Origin of Calypso

Calypso in Trinidad and Tobago, is mainly of African origin. In 1914, the first Calypso recording was made. Calypso was firstly described as a poor man’s newspaper in times when literacy was not wide spread. This is traced back to the roots of African traditions where songs of self-praise and scorn for others, brought here by enslaved peoples were sung. In the year 1920, the first calypso tent was formed. At this tent calypsonians would practice their songs for the carnival period.

Over the years the calypso art form has been transformed and presented in various categories such as, political commentary, social commentary and humorous. Most of the top calypsonians have been male, namely, The Growling Tiger, Lord Executor and Lord Pretender. However, the Calypso Monarch competition being won by a woman for the first time gave rise to Calypso Rose, the undisputed “Queen of Calypso”. Calypso Rose signalled the entry of many more women on the Calypso stage. Over the years, Calypso Rose has written and performed songs with themes ranging from political commentaries to party songs, and has won numerous awards. Her 1996 hit Fire In Me Wire has become a calypso anthem. Calypso Rose has managed to excel in this otherwise male dominated genre.
