I identify with my culture as a Jamaican/Canadian. A lot of persons think of Jamaican culture as being just about reggae music and marijuana, but for me culture refers to all the other music that we produce, we have such unique dance moves and rhythms that are only found in our Jamaican culture. I identify with our athletic talent that Jamaicans are known for. I am passionate about the history and the path we have taken to become the country that we are today, from being under the rule of the British Monarchy to gaining our independence in 1964. We have also our unique art styles that are appreciated by visitors and persons from all over the world. We also as a culture have European influences that are entrenched in our culture. Finally culture for me refers to our unique flavours and our amazing food, our dishes are loved by persons from all parts of the world who travel just to experience the authentic taste of jamaica. Jamaica is also known as a culture that is huge on christianity and our faith is a major part of the Jamaican culture.

The four things listed above describe what is important to me in our culture. I have a strong faith and my beliefs play an important role in how I live my life and the morals I try to teach my children to live by. My attitudes about the world are all shaped by the culture I grew up with, it can be seen in how my language is when communicating with others. I am reminded about my culture each time I am in a new environment because I am aware that there are expectations placed on me about how I should act and behave in certain settings.

Material culture refers to the things that we can see and touch and things we use in our daily lives. This can include our home, clothes and valuables that are important to us. These things also shape our beliefs and affect the norms that we adhere to and practice.
Examples are:
Food
Clothes
Books
Pictures
Our Cars
My Mom died in 1988 when I was 14 yrs old. I don't have many things of her left, but I do have a picture of her and I and it is very important to me. This is a part of my material culture. My mom's picture is attached to this post.

I am a part of different subculture in my life. Some of it is also online. I am a part of the online culture at Durham College, this subculture has its own set of distinct rules and norms that are expected and unique to the college separate from the culture of the larger society. I am also a part of the subculture as one of Jehovah's Witnesses, we have meetings together, now over Zoom since COVID. We have dinners together, share positive messages with our neighbours and we get together and share life stories and have movie nights and spend time together with friends who share the same values and beliefs. That is the part of the SUBCULTURE that I enjoy being involved in.

High Culture

One subculture I also identify with is High culture. While I do enjoy doing things that are consumed by everyday people, I do like activities that are unique. My family likes to ski during the winter. Ironically they are not outdoor kids but the one activity that they enjoy doing outside in the snow is that. Enjoying skiing which is often described as a sport for the elite is why I believe I identify with High Culture.
