An issue that is explored in Caged Warrior is divorce. Although it is a heartbreaking topic to discuss, divorce is a major factor in shaping McCutcheon's life. When parents get a divorce it drastically alters the relationship between parents and kids. "Divorced mothers tend to be less affectionate and communicative with their children" shows that after a divorce mothers and children tend to stop talking(Effects of Divorce on Family relationships). People can see this in Caged warrior when it says "I'd stopped going to church after my mom left, though"(Sitomer 44). So after his parent's divorce he had less communication with his mother.

When a couple gets a divorce the children tend to have less support from home. "Children in divorced families receive less financial assistance from their parents" shows that most kids in a divorce family have to provide for themselves(Effects of divorce on Family Relationships). This is also the case in Caged Warrior as it says "When she left, she took the only source of steady income, the only source of steady meals, the only source of steady smiles, faith, or warmth under our roof, too"(Sitomer 16). This shows that his parents divorce left him with the task of providing money and food for his sister and father. So the issue of divorce is a major factor in the life of McCutcheon Daniels.

The central theme of Caged Warrior is that people should do what they want rather than what someone else wants them to do. In the book the author is trying to convey that children should make their own choice because it will typically be the one that makes them happy. This is the theme of the book because McCutcheon is forced into fighting and as he gets older he doesn't really want to. But instead of doing what he wants McCutcheon does what his father wants him to do. In the book he starts to realize maybe he can do something else that will cause less pain and make him happy. So the main theme of this book is that people should make their own decision rather do something that is forced onto you. The picture below shows how you should be comfortable making your own decision and should be happy with that. It connects because it means you shouldn't rely on someone else to make choices for you.

By reading Caged Warrior so far i have learned that kids from one parent households are less fortunate than others. In fact that some kids have to provide money to keep their family up. "After my next fight, i knew i'd need to make sure that when payday came i'd score some extra cheese. Gem needed s new coat for the winter" shows how some kids have to earn money to support their siblings(Sitomer 81). This is an insight i have gained from the novel because most kids have parents that will buy things like that for them. It has broadened my perspective about how some kids are less fortunate than others. The picture connects because it shows how kids have to work and in the book McCutcheon fights/works so he can support his sister.
