Many people have tried 1 to give up Correct smoking at some point in their lives, and these days many of us 2 are attempting Correct to stop taking 3 another Correct substance which is not cigarettes, but which 4 might Correct be killing the same number of people 5 as Correct tobacco, or even more. I am talking about sugar. When I went to the doctor five years ago, he told me that sugar 6 would Correct kill me one day if I didn’t avoid 7 eating Correct it. My only chance of long-term survival, said the doctor, was 8 cutting out Correct all sugar from my diet. Before that day, I 9 had never tried Correct to quit anything; 10 however Correct , I didn’t think it would be too difficult. “I have achieved difficult things in my life, much more difficult than that,” I thought. It wasn't true.I didn't know how difficult it was to stop smoking, or drinking alcohol, because I 11 had never been Correct addicted to anything, but when I stopped eating sugar, I realised that sugar is a very powerful drug. I think it 12 would have been Correct easier if I had been addicted to nicotine, for example, instead of sugar. The first few weeks or months I 13 used to dream Correct that I was eating chocolate or cakes, and then I woke up in the morning and my body was crying for sugar. It's been 3 months now, and I 14 have eaten Correct very, very little sugar in that time; only the added sugar that food manufacturers put in some of their processed products, like bread, tinned tomato, etc. I am very happy because I don't crave sweet things any more, and I feel 15 much Correct healthier and energetic than a few months ago.

I didn't see anybody behind me, but I knew that I 1 was being followed Correct. It was my instinct, I could feel it. I saw that a bus 2 had just stopped Correct at the bus stop at the end of the street. I ran and 3 got on Correct it. I didn't ask the bus driver where 4 it was going Correct because it didn't matter, I just wanted to 5 get away Correct as fast as possible.I knew I was in danger. I had put 6 myself Correct in a dangerous situation the day 7 when Correct I had helped a woman in a bar. A man 8 was physically abusing Correct her when I hit him in the face. When he fell unconscious to the floor, I recognised the tattoos on his arms and neck. He was a member of one of the worst gangs in Los Angeles. The woman looked at me with panic in her eyes. "Go away, please, before his friends 9 arrive Correct," she said. "If they see you, they 10 'll kill Correct you. "Do you think he'll remember my face?" I asked her. "I have 11 no Correct doubt," she answered. Now I was in a bus wondering why I had to punch that man in the face. If I hadn't done that stupid thing, nothing 12 would have happened Correct to me. I got off the bus after a few blocks and I started walking. I 13 had to Correct do something, but what? That dangerous man had seen my face. "Of course," I thought, "my face!". If that man had seen my face, I just needed a different face, a face that he could not recognise!Three days later I had plastic surgery and I got a new face. That was a few months ago, and I 14 have met Correct the man I attacked a few times since then, and he has no idea who I am. And the best part is that I 15 didn't use to Correct like my face, and now I love it!

Hi Suzan,I'm having a wonderful time in Los Angeles. The weather is 1 hotter Correct and drier 2 than Correct in England and Americans are friendlier than 3 us Correct. The food is better here; it's not the same 4 as Correct the food in England at all! From all the countries I've been to, I think English food is the 5 least Correct pleasant. It's awful. Yesterday I had the best hamburger I’ve 6 ever Correct eaten! The hotel is beautiful. I think it’s not as 7 nice as Correct the hotel we stayed in New York, but it's 8 much more Correct comfortable. They say that Los Angeles is one of the most expensive cities 9 in Correct the world, but actually, I'm not spending 10 as much Correct money as I thought. I’ll phone you when I get back.Love,Megan.

Are top sports players paid too much?
1 Nowadays Correct, top sportspeople, such as football players or basketball players have huge salaries, and this promotes a lot of debate. But do they earn too much?
2 In my opinion Correct, their salaries are fair. 3 Firstly Correct, the career of a professional sports player is short – they usually retire when they are in their thirties. 4 In addition Correct, many of them have to retire earlier because they get injured and have to stop playing.
5 Secondly Correct, sports stars are celebrities, and all celebrities lose their privacy. Journalists, paparazzi and fans follow them everywhere, and they want to get pictures or talk to them all the time.
Moreover Correct, now anyone can take photos with their mobile phone and publish them at any moment on their social media accounts.
7 To sum up Correct, 8 I believe Correct top professional sports players have the salaries they deserve because their careers are much shorter and because during those years, their personal lives are affected by their popularity.

About twenty-five years ago, the results of an exciting new study were reported in the news: If children listen to the music of Mozart, they 1 will become more intelligent. Immediately, huge numbers of Mozart CDs were purchased by people 2 who wanted their children to be smarter. The statement was generally assumed to be true. After all, 3 most people think Mozart was a genius, and maybe if we listened to his music, his intelligence 4 might transfer to us.

However, if you read about the experiment 5 that led to this claim, there is little evidence it’s true. Firstly, children 6 were not tested in the original experiment. University students were. The thirty-six young adults who took part did one of three things for ten minutes. Some sat in silence, 7 others listened to some relaxation instructions and a third group listened to Mozart’s piano music. Afterwards, they all completed various tasks, one of which involved paper shapes. This experiment 8 was repeated three times. It was found that the students 9 who listened to Mozart did better in the paper shapes activity than 10 the other students. However, the beneficial effect only lasted for about fifteen minutes.

11 Since then, a number of similar experiments have been conducted which confirm that listening to Mozart’s music 12 can lead to a temporary improvement in a person’s ability to do spatial puzzles. They don’t however, improve intelligence. Other studies showed that there is 13 nothing special about Mozart’s music. 14 Listening to other classical music, pop music and even stories can also wake up the brain. The effect is especially strong if the listener likes the sound.

So, listening to Mozart won’t harm your children. It could even lead to a love of classical music. But if they have an important test ahead, you 15 should probably tell them to study instead of listening to some music on.
