Starting at midnight that day, he said, citizens of the GDR were free to cross the country's borders. He <strong>wall</strong> came down partly because of a bureaucratic accident but it fell amid a wave of revolutions that left the Soviet-led communist bloc teetering on the brink of collapse and helped define a new world order.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>On October 19, 1960  the U.S. placed an embargo on exports to Cuba except for food and medicine after Cuba nationalized American-owned Cuban oil refineries without compensation. The Cubans wanted communism, America didn't want that, but the USSR supported that. In February 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed an embargo on trade between the United States and Cuba.<br><br><br></div>]]></description>

During the Cuban Missile Crisis, leaders of the U.S. and the Soviet Union engaged in a tense, 13-day political and military standoff in October 1962 over the installation of nuclear-armed Soviet missiles on Cuba, just 90 miles from U.S. shores.  The Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962 was a direct and dangerous confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War and was the moment when the two superpowers came closest to nuclear conflict.<br><br></div>]]></description>

America's involvement in Vietnam began with Eisenhower. By the end of the 1950s, Vietnam had divided into North Vietnam, which was a communist, and South Vietnam. Vietnam was involved with France, the United States, China, the Laos Soviet Union, Cambodia, South Korea, and other allies of the US and Vietnam.<br><br></div>]]></description>
