I plan to send kids off to read unsupervised (leave Zoom) once we're done with synchronous stuff. Every Zoom will start with some sort of check-in that requires knowledge of the previous class's reading. Journal entry, Google Form survey where I then ask random students to explain their reasoning, etc. It will start low-stakes, but I'll start attaching points if it's clear that reading isn't happening. My kids have overwhelmingly complained about having to spend too much time in Zoom, so I'll start by granting their wish and then re-evaluating depending on behavior.

I have been doing this with my virtual kids all year. I don't make them stay on Zoom while they read, but they know they will have to share with either me or the whole class in some way when the time is up. It could be a quick reflection on where they are on their personal reading goal they set at the beginning of the year. It could be an Eduprotocol ThinSlide, which is great for sharing books quickly and giving kids ideas on what their peers are reading. It could be a little more detailed with a Eduprotocol Sketch & Tell, or a round or two of Eduprotocol's Game of Quotes. You can tell pretty quickly if they weren't reading so that you can chat with them the next time. The students like the Eduprotocol activities, so they don't usually complain.
