There were many majors I have looked through and most bored me or didn't seem like something I would enjoy. My dream is to become a professional artist, whether that is as a freelance artist, illustrator, animator, etc. All I know is that I want a career in art because it excites me.

I saw this movie, which is Spider-Man Across the Spider-verse and it inspired me with the idea of being an animator or honing my skills and craft to a point where I might be able to create something like what I saw with this movie and put that out into the world to inspire others.

Art BA vs Art BFA

There are two major programs related to art specifically, the BFA stands for Bachelor's of Fine Arts so the only difference is the word Fine. This means that the BFA is more honed in on creating art than studying, understanding, and creating. Overall the Art BA is much more general while the BFA applies more directly to those who want a career in the professional creation of art.

The career of an animator involves many different responsibilities, you have to storyboard, plan out the animation, sketch the multiple images that make up the animation, talk with clients, use software to animate, and work with the team to get the whole project completed. The pay range is 55k-96k depending on experience and place of employment of course.

This career is more in line with the type of art and things I do now in my free time. This job involves more than just drawing. You are tasked with designing various characters, locations, objects, weapons, expressions, etc. depending on the client. Since the art I do now is drawing characters whether it be from shows or movies I like, this aligns with my skills quite nicely. Average pay in Minnesota for a concept artist is around 60k.

I am currently enrolled in Introduction to Drawing for next semester. This class is going to cover the basics on how to draw from real models and capture various different things with numerous forms of media. While I already have experience I think this class will be a fresh and fun new experience you often don't get being self taught.

I have always loved drawing since I was young, but I continued it until now, not to a super serious level but as something I enjoyed doing in my free time. I want a job where I can do something I enjoy, inspire people, be authentic, and create something that will make a difference and add something to our world. That is the reason I see myself in a career related to art because it allows me to do all those things in some capacity.

I have been attending CAPE meetings that have been aimed at exploring many different majors and this is the product of those meetings, I have always thought of art as a career but was afraid I wouldn't make it, but now I've been inspired to give it a go. I am planning to reach out to my art teacher from high school to discuss careers in more detail, and other artists in the community to get their perspective to make sure it is right fit.
