They do that to children and not adults because adults are not as easy to "mold". Its a boarding school. The purpose of the residential schools was to eliminate all aspects of Aboriginal culture. The two primary objectives were to remove and isolate children from the influence of their homes, families, traditions and cultures. Students had there hair cut short, wore uniforms and they had to be at there class at a certain time.
