Literacy is no longer just about reading a formal print resource, like a textbook, newspaper, etc. We HAVE to include digital literacy. Communicating in different modes or "languages": coding, text language, concise, but also teaching them the "right" way to use the technology: safety, validity, purposeful.

Literacy is now so much about technological literacy. The need to be, at a minimum, aware of all the technology available is a necessity to be relevant and literate in today's world.

Being literate in the digital age is comprehending the world around (digital literacy, critical literacy, emotional literacy, informational literacy, financial literacy, etc)

Students need to be able to interpret and communicate information in different ways.

Newsletters, quick video tutorials about the most common technology questions, concerns, etc., include a station at events such as Literacy Night, STEM Night, open houses, etc. Post quick snapshots on social media with links to edutopia, reading research, etc.

Some of our school populations do not have the family engagement, unless families are fed :) So when we have a large school large event, "sneak" in digital literacy education to families. Add info to already existing publications.

Social media is probably the easiest way to connect with parents. Also, use your most successful in-school parent gatherings to include digital literacy.

Our librarians are working towards centers so they can offer opportunities to enhance what classroom teachers are teaching, incorporate makerspace/ STEM, career exploration, ISTE standards and digital/information literacy literacy skills. More student-centered instruction allows our librarians on a fixed schedule time to facilitate/ help students select books/ and do some shelving here and there.
