Meg murry is twelve years old and she's the main character in the story. Unlike Megs beautiful mother meg is very plain. Meg always refers to herself as the odd one out and she feels out of place at school, because shes socially awkward and insecure. Meg struggles with school a lot and the other kids make fun of her because she isn't as smart as everyone else. These traits are important because Meg changes throughout the novel and it becomes more interesting, because she goes from being socially awkward and shy to being brave and courageous through her adventures.

Meg changes a great deal throughout the novel. When we first meet Meg she is insecure and awkward. Meg's insecurity is most obvious at the start. She's doing poorly in school, she hates being compared to her parents, and among her peers she's said to be immature, but she loves her family very much and wants to find her father. She learns to be more responsible by taking care of her little brother. She also has to open herself up to new experiences and people, she has to learn to trust.
