My favorite project was the Chinese Headdress. I got the idea when looking on the explore page of Instagram. I saw someone wearing a traditional Chinese wedding outfit with hair clips and a headdress. 

My construction process was I took a styrofoam circle and cut it in half. I then attached it to two types of headbands using zip ties. Before attaching them I glued yarn to the styrofoam to simulate volumized hair. From there I added different lengths zip ties for the sunrise effect. Next I added the decorations using hot glue. I got the decorations from Amazon. After glueing I did a home photoshoot in my room by myself. 


What would you change if you could redo the project?

I wouldn't change anything. I really love the way my project turned out. 


What is your favorite element or aspect of the artwork and why?

My favorite element in the art piece was the element of line and texture. I used both a lot. And it resulted in a beautiful work. Like was seen using the zip ties, yarn, and headband. Texture was everywhere. The lace, the yarn, the flower petals, etc. 


What did the creative process teach you?
It taught me that plans can change. Especially for the better when you start to put everything together.

I think I did a good job. The headdress received a lot of compliments as well as the photos I took with the headdress. 
There wasn't any stray glue strands on the piece and everything was secure.

The project that caught my eye was the burrito hat/headdress. It was large, well made, and visually interesting. 
It was made with a variety of textures and objects.

My favorite project was the face vessel because the process was where I really started to understand and enjoy working with the different properties of clay. 


Part II
The concept is around having one's head "in the clouds" and how overthinking or being "stuck" in one's head can be applied to anything, including whatever objects are placed in the vessel / "clouds". This is a general feeling that I've always had and I felt that it was important to give a surreal, fantastical look without being too pretty. To stay true to this, I started by pinch molding a general cup shape for the head and added details by pinching and smearing layers onto the face, keeping the texture rough. I also chose androgynous and age-ambiguous facial features, but highlighted the slack-jawed and dazed expression. The intent was keep the piece open to interpretation, so that viewers could find awe, surprise, confusion, fear, and/or even horror in it. 

Looking back, I would spend less time on the detail work in the clouds because the glaze ended up covering up the nuances. I would also have done some test pieces to determine the exact amount of each glaze to use. My goal was always to include drip details, so the glaze would have had to be thick anyways. I'd hoped that the deep ridges would highlight different glaze properties associated with thickness, but this was not clearly shown in the glaze combination I chose. Ideally, I would have also liked some more in-progress photos as well as some 360deg shots to show the glaze before firing. In future iterations, I think I'd like to sculpt even more realistic anatomic details for the skull and neck.

Overall, the contrast between the natural clay and the clouds is what made this piece my favorite. There are other projects' details that I am proud of but this one was closest to my vision and I love that the impact can be seen even from across the room. I'm proud that my instincts were correct and the results were so positive on my first try at glazing. This creative process has taught me to trust myself and to really lean into this newfound passion for creating with clay.


Part III
In looking at my peers' projects, Inga's 2 bonus face vessels made me pause the longest. Both are cup-sized with closed eyes, exaggerated features, and have strong textures without obscuring the facial expressions. I found the pieces so lovely and am reminded of drinking hot tea in brisk weather while appreciating in nature.
