Scylla was a sea monster whose territory was a rocky straight, opposite of Kharybdis' whirlpool. Ships who sailed too close to her rocks would lose six men to each of her six heads.

The description of Scylla derives from Scylla's name, which was associated with hermit-crab, dog, and dog shark. Homer expresses Scylla's appearance as a creature with twelve dangling feet, six long necks, with heads lined with a triple row of sharp teeth. He also narrates that her voice was like that of yelping dogs, which would refer to words associated with her name.

According to the late classical writers, Scylla was once a beautiful nymph adored by the sea-god Glaukos. She was transformed into a monster when the jealous witch, Kirke, uses magic on her. However, older poets simply envisioned Scylla as a monster born from a monstrous family.

In the Odyssey, Scylla was a much destructive and scary creature. Many ships and boats feared the waters and wished to never go there. Laying within her deep caves and lairs, she ate everything that was in reach and this included six of Odysseus's companions. Odysseus seemingly made it out alive out of one of her cluthes by holding onto a tree until the raft Scylla swollowed flew back onto the surface after an amount of hours.
