Departing from the introspective nature of Process, Intersections seems to focus on external issues - community ones to be specific. Issues that may not necessarily have a straightforward solutiuon, or one at all. These issues are known as wicked problems.

Our upcoming workshop is surrounding disabilities, and the potential issues various disabilities can present. Can we solve them?

This workshop was an interesting one, this was the first time we'd done group work on this course, and the short, design sprint nature of it meant we had to move fast!

Our group accomplished the task in the allocated time, and I think we covered a lot of bases in out outcomes, we ended up with three very different outcomes, which Rebecca liked.

Working in a group was definitely a challenge at times, as due to the size of the groups we struggled to spread out the workload evenly. This meant only a few of us did the majority of the work, and the short length of the workshop meant some aspects weren't as fleshed out as they could have been. However, the challenge was definitely beneficial in terms of my design practice, and networking/ collaboration skills.

However, as shown in my boards we produced some great work I think, and it really went a long way in improving various skills of mine, and was a nice change of pace.

London was fascinating, we got an inside view into the world of design, along with the BA students. We visited five studios during our time, and each offered something very different.

The studios ranged from branding, to experience design, to user interfaces, logos - lots!

The first visit, and by far the tallest building - Superunion. We were brought into a sleek board room, that could've been lifted from a Bond villain's lair. But instead of being fed to piranas, they spoke about the London Symphony Orchestra.

They walked us through their most notable projects, and it was a very interesting journey. Superunion utilise technology you wouldn't usually associate with. branding agency, and create some very unique pieces. Everyone was very friendly, and it was a great start to the trip.

However, for me, the company is too big. I can't see myself working at an agency that large, and potentially never meeting some higher ups, because the company is so big. I definitely preferred the intimacy of the smaller studios we visited, which I'll get to.

With by far the nicest studio, UsTwo was quite unexpected. Their studio functioned in a way I wouldn't have expected from a design studio. Firstly, they prefer 'ideas' to 'practical skills', which I thought was brilliant. They were really engaging, and the three or so members who spoke to us all came from vastly different backgrounds. It just goes to show you don't need to shoehorn yourself into a hole you think you "should " be in.

Woah, Benji, what a character! Tucked away in North London, was a studio working on projects I had no clue a design studio would work on. Working in the Far East, designing architecture, creating a map, all sorts. This was by far the smallest studio I'd ever seen, and I had no clue design studios could operate at this size, I'd been brainwashed into thinking all successful companies inevitably end up like Superunion, but its nice to know you don't need a skyscraper to be well respected.

Another interesting point is that they don't have any social media presence?! No clue how that's worked in their favour, and I'm certainly not taking that risk. But its good to know that it's possible to succeed through classic word of mouth, which I suppose is the most important method anyway. But at this stage I wasn't to make sure I have as much exposure as possible. Also, while their work was interesting, it isn't the kind of work I can see myself doing, but it was worth a visit.

Hiring a tiny space in a large office block with rentable offices was again, something I wasn't aware of before - and DEFINITELY something I'd like to do in future. The dream (like most designers) is to have their own studio, and just hiring a small space surrounded by loads of other creatives sounds very appealing to me. So did their work actually, Lantern worked on branding, and visualising companies up and down the country. Two of their four members went to Falmouth, and it was great to see ANOTHER studio thrive, headed by Falmouth graduates.

My key takeaway from this studio was definitely their space, I will consider this when the time comes, as I'd love to have my own studio space to work in a small team on projects we love.

With the opposite presenting strategy, Someone really caught my attention. Instead of following the formula of every other studio, Someone presented their failings. Or at least their initial failings, which ended up coming around to a positive finish.

Their most notable project was their work with Norwich City FC, and redesigning their logo. Which received some initial backlash, but eventually the fans accepted that their new crest was far better than the original.

Firstly, I have discovered exactly what kind of studio I want to aim towards in future - small to medium! Large places like Superunion are just a little too much for me, and their work seemed a little too corporate and large scale for me. Where as places like Lantern, who hired a small space in a large create to-let building, create great work without all the over-heads.

I'm still not sure exactly what path of design I want to follow, but this trip gave me a valuable insight into some of the routes available.
