2) In chapter 7 it shows Alyce's sense of Justice. The text states in page 46," She took something from under her skirt, threw it into the river, and followed the crowd home. And so it was that all (Except the fortunate midwife) who had taunted or tormented Alyce were punished for their secret of sins. After this the devil was never seen in the village again, and no one but Alyce knew why." Alyce was getting bullying by almost everyone in the town, so she wanted to punish them. During this time period religion was a big deal so that if the devil was upon there town, then everyone would be kind to everyone and people would be very scared.

Alyce's actions reveal that she is changing her identity to be less on survival and doing more good for the village. She developed a character. "Alyce even had a little time to herself, to wander and think and plan, to watch and learn from old Gilbert Gray-Head about the carving of polishing of wood, and to ask questions of the priest abouts sin and evil." (41-42). Alyce is realizing that she has free time and she is a person and now that she has all of the maslow's hierarchy of needs she is now come to self actualization and wants to stop the people who are committing sins because those people made fun of her.

Alyce did earn justice after the boys were taunting her because Will promised to stop taunting her after she saved him.

anum #1. "Some were mean, like Grommet Smith...could rub chicken manure in her hair..."(Cushman, 40). In chapter 7, Alyce was justified in unveiling the sins and secrets of the townspeople because they always tormented her, called her rude names, and more and Alyce never did anything about it. But, now that Alyce has more self-esteem, she realizes that she should not let the people hurt her like that.

anum #2. "...and no one but Alyce knew why"(Cushman, 46). This evidence can imply that Alyce was the one doing all the acts that the townspeople thought were the devil because she had a strong sense of justice and she got them back by revealing their secrets and making them think it was the devil because of all the bad things the people did to her.

Evil because they feel good about taunting and picking on the weak, like Alyce. "Since this is not so, and the world is just as it is and no more, nothing changed. Most of the villages still paid no attention to Alyce at all. Some were mean, like Grommet Smith, near as big as a dozen Alyces, who would sit on top of the girl so Jack and Wat could rub chicken manure into her hair." (Cushman, 40). This shows what I mean about how the weak get picked on, because Alyce is still frail, like how she was before she was taken in by the midwife.

Alyce's actions reveal a change in her identity because she can feel more confident about herself and she thinks she won't be known as Beetle/Brat. "'Get out of my sight, Dung Beetle, before I squash you.' 'Alyce' 'What did you call me?' 'Not you, me. Alyce. My name is Alyce.'" (Cushman, 33). Since Alyce gave herself a name, she corrects people when they call her Dung Beetle or Brat, because she has pride in the name she gave herself.

Ilina#3- Based on chapter 7 the villagers should be called evil because "Most of the villagers still paid no attention to Alyce. Some were mean like Grommet Smith, near as big as a dozen Alyce's, who would sit on top of the girl so Jack and Wat could rub chicken manure in her hair, or the miller..or the red head Will"(Cushman 40). Most of the people in the village are taunting Alyce and being mean to her just because of who she is. They should not be considered good because the stuff they are doing is not good and nice. They should be considered evil for being mean and hurting Alyce.

1)Was Alyce justified in unveiling the sins of the townspeople? How so (Evidence)

Yes it was right for her to expose all of her sins. They have been taunting her and making her her very low self esteem, and making her stay at safety needs all her life. She justifieds it because they have been bullying her and now she is making it right by exposing there sins.

"Who had taunted or tormented Alyce were punished for their secret sins. After this, the Devil was never seen in the village again, and no one but Alyce knew why."

3)Can the villagers be called good or evil? How so? (Evidence)

The villagers can be called both. From a glance they can be good and not an ounce of evil on them. But if you look closer into them you can see all there sins behind close doors. Like how the 'Devil' is showing everyone's Sins.

"The Devil has indeed been here' cried the priest, 'and he has temped our miller into thief! But let us deal with this thief mercifully, for which of us could withstand the devil.

4- Alyce's actions start to form a change in her identity when Alyce was alone she had time to think to herself and started to realize who shes starting to become. "It was quiet for a few days, with all the villagers inside and idle, that Alyce even had a little time to herself, to wander and think and plan, to watch and learn from old gilbert Gray-Headed about the carving and polishing of wood, and to ask questions of the priest about sin and evil and the Devil" (Cushman 41-42). Alyce is forming a identity because she is starting to want to learn and ask questions about things and wants to learn things. She also has time to herself to think and plan things.

1. Yes, Alyce was justified because all of those people bullied her acting like they were free of sin when they were all committing terrible sins. The author states, "The startled miller looked up, caught in the act of putting some of Dick's granny's grain into his own sacks." The miller was caught stealing which is a sin. The miller pinches Alyce's rump when he is not free of sin so he has no right to do this.

2. Alyce's sense of justice is harsh. The townspeople shouldn't be doing this stuff to Alyce when none of them are free of sin.

3. The villagers are evil because they torture Alyce when they are not free of sin. The author states, "Some were mean, like Grommet Smith, near as big as a dozen Alyces, who would sit on top of her so Jack and Wat could rub chicken manure into her hair, or the miller, who pinched her rump when she brought grain to the mill to be ground." These people are cruel to Alyce because they just want to be. These people are classified as evil because these actions are unjustified.

4. Alyce's actions reveal that she is a good person but she finally needs to reveal these sins that the townspeople commit in the shadows. These people do these things even though she is not free of sin.

Alyce was justified for unveiling the sins of the townspeople because it is not right that people were committing sins and nobody knew. Alyce helped reveal their wrongs. This also didn't directly reveal their sins because she never told anyone that this wasn't the devil

3. The villagers can be called evil because they all would commit sins in secret thinking there would be no consequence. on pg 47 they find something in the river and the text states "wood carved in the shape of hooves of some unknown beast". They think the devil is forcing people into committing sins but someone was really pretending to be the devil. The Hoove molds make Hoof prints to look like the devil. People weren't commiting sins because of the devil they were just commiting sins normally and thought there wouldn't be any punishment. They are evil because they were just commiting sins even though there are such harsh punishments. The miller commits a sin on pg 43 and the text states "The villagers agreed and so the miller who had listened to the devil did not have his hands chopped off". If they didn't think it was the devil he would have had his hands cut off yet he still commit sins.
