Dr Brown is an expert in online teaching and learning. He has been responsible for a number of innovations in this space at Deakin, including using gamification and social media to engage online students. He also produces highly innovative and engaging course videos. His most recent published research concerns topics such as building online communities to engage learners, using social media for research, and gamifying student learning.

Key benefits of micro-credentials include how specific and industry-relevant they are, and that they are achievable in a short period of time (or self-paced). It would be interesting to find businesses with staff who undertook micro-credentials to learn skills needed to adapt to changing businesses needs in a tight timeframe, as they would be able to provide applied and specific examples of how their studies impacted their businesses.
