This summer's summer classes are new to me in many ways - zoom classroom, new teacher partners, new subject (Mandarin), new kids of course... it's always exciting to have new experiences. but what I enjoyed the most was the teamwork among the 4 teachers (Yuqing, Jinmei, Ben and me), we paired up and took turn to teach, we could support each other and offered our own skills/ideas. one time I was sick on the day I had to teach, my team switched with me very quickly. And I also appreciate the kids/parents who joined us. students' participation and progress are always encouragements to teachers. :) Hope they can carry on what we taught and return to us for future classes/events!

Special Summer Art Class

In the past summers, I used to help out fellowship/gospel more than teaching a class (taught once in 2016 or 2017). This summer was a different summer and I got to teach art class and took turns teaching with a new partner, Yuqing. Yuqing is very professional in teaching as she is a teacher. She guided me and gave suggestions when we were doing the lesson plan together so things would work better. Plus, teaching class on Zoom is definitely a special experience. Give thanks that the Lord has blessed the class in all areas! I have Sharon and Victoria as assistants to help me out with technological works since I could just use my phone to teach. All sections went through very well and effective because we prep everything a week before all sections started and of course it was God’s grace and God prepared. Another give thanks, I feel glad that the kids enjoyed drawing, painting, coloring and making arts and crafts every time we came together in class. Hope to continue to see them in the future!

Teaching online is an interesting experience, but I enjoyed the team work. Being able to partner up with Veikis and co-teach with Yemei and Candy was a wonderful experience. We all had the same goal to make the class interesting and productive. I was inspired by the other teachers’ passion and willingness to help. I have not really thought about why I decided to teach since I had so many other commitments for this summer, but I am happy I did. In the last day celebration, I only joined for a bit but I stay long enough to hear how we were described as a family who taught students without any charge because we are brothers and sisters and we want to spread our love. That was a wonderful way to put it in words. Teaching is hard and I honestly wanted to be far away from instruction this summer I had a very intense year full of challenged and unexpected drawbacks. I am glad I didn't refute this offer because seeing those energetic youth and hearing them participate was one of my highlights this summer. All classes were amazing, but the Spanish one was extraordinary!

Yuqing- This is a quite special summer to me. Through my 14 years of teaching career, I started teaching in summer school program when I was still in college, this is my first time teaching voluntarily. Yet, even though I don’t get pay, but the rewarded I got is way better than money. I taught Mandarin and art this summer, and I was working with 2 awesome teams. Teaching summer school is not new to me, teaching through Zoom is not new for me, but teaching with a group of brothers and sisters from the church is a brand new experience for me. Yet, they not be very experienced in teaching, but their team spirt and love heart totally moved me. It’s very different than my other teaching experience. Because of the comparison, I can really felt the difference between the Christian teachers and the World teachers. Thank you all my colleagues for setting a good example to me and also to our students. It’s a great experience that I will always treasure.

I have never been to be a class teacher in the summer day camp in the past, but I was the fellowship teacher or helper before. We have also never thought that this year summer will be like this because of the pandemic situation, I feel succeed after teaching whole 6 dessert classes with Jinmei. From planning to preparing the Google Classroom, teaching, contacting, updating each week lesson and using technical tools are not easy, however, Jinmei and I finally did it. We are happy and proud of ourselves. I give thanks to the Lord that He also comforted me during the time I taught students to make tiramisu. I was so worried that the students, especially the younger ones who would get sick from eating the tiramisu that was made by raw eggs. I did not expect that most of the students love to make and eat tiramisu most. I also prayed for them that they would not get sick from eating the tiramisu. The Lord knew my worries. I give thanks to Qing who replaced me to assist Jinmei one time. I am also happy that the dessert class get some positive feedbacks from the students who are mothers and the younger ones. Their feedbacks became our encouragements and supports. I feel the zoom classes is actually like a real in person summer classes, but the only different is you see the people on the computer. I agree with one student who is Jinmei's friend Xiu Ya said these classes could bring people together in this pandemic time. Thank you God that Jinmei and I have these experiences and we finally did it. On the other hand, I hope these classes can bring people get to know the church more and get to know God's love! ❤️

Joanne

I give thanks to partake in this meaningful, abundant summer teaching in music - singing ONLINE. The 6 weeks went by sooo quickly! I recalled that we were vocalizing (doing vocal warm-ups) and sang different songs together: Amazing Grace, A Whole New World, You Raise Me Up... I’m happy to see the students get very excited to join the singing class every week, and it’s amazing to watch the students record their singing and share their songs at the last class. I feel supported with the help of FeiFei, Charis, and Onesia, who are teachers & helpers, as well as June and BS who help reach out to the students so they can all be on the same page. I see the great work done by a supportive, loving team of brothers and sisters! ❤️💪😄

A few days before the class begins, I was told to be in charge for the dessert class with Fei Fei. It was too sudden for me, as well as for Fei Fei. After that, we used two days to plan for the course contents and plan all the details on our own. Give thanks, God used us greatly!! The class turned out successfully and the students loved the class. They even asked us why we volunteered for the dessert class. And I told them the reason why and introduced our church to them. They were very glad to be able to join this class and knowing our church. Someone also expressed that they are willing to join more of our events in the future.

This year’s summer is different, many things changed. In the past I have been helping out in children fellowship during the summer, like leading songs and take care of them. Never though I would be a teacher one day teaching the kids, especially through zoom makes everything different and new to each one of us. Yet, it was a very nice experience a long the way of teaching the kids I also learned and gained a lot. I’m so thankful to have Candy as my partner, Veikis and Randy’s support working as a team really makes the different. We planned the lessons together and discussed, learning something never was easy especially a language, but so precious the kids from not wanted to show their faces to really have fun and participate in the class. All of us enjoy the class, we learned and changed to teach better and let them understand better. Sometimes during the class, we would have technical problems but they were nice to wait for us and focus during the class. I’m happy that I could have this experience during this summer, and thankful that all the classes went very smooth.

I really enjoyed teaching this summer's baking class! Usually in the summers, I teach academic subjects with a few interest classes a week, but this summer was fully just baking! I spent weeks making sure the recipes I had chosen had ingredients that were easily accessible to all my students, didn't require such special equipment. and tried to make sure parents were able to get ingredients ready weeks in advanced if needed. I even recipe tested some recipes beforehand to make sure they were easy to follow and good recipes. Since I didn't have another more experienced baker as a helper, I was worried in the beginning that I wouldn't be able to help my students if they fell behind. However, everyone was able to follow along really well, even with small hiccups here and there. My students were super creative with their toppings and even though sometimes while making it, someone's looked different than everyone else's, they kept going and ended up with beautiful bakes! They were able to substitute toppings to ones that they enjoyed and I'm so proud of all of them. My students were willing to show their faces during our baking class and didn't hesitate to ask questions. I give thanks to the Lord for giving me 2 little helpers (Naomi & Serena) that were willing to take over if I needed them to. I'm so glad that everyone enjoyed themselves this summer and hope they continue to use the recipes they loved and the knowledge they learned.

To my surprise, the kids are really doing good job learning mandarin even though it might be their very first mandarin lesson. Hopefully they can use what they had learned in this class in their life later on. I also hope that their interest in mandarin will remain because after all it’s good to know more about their root.

This year I was able to partake in teaching Spanish class with Randy, Candy, and Yemei! Even though I speak Spanish I never taught Spanish, speaking and teaching is very different. Therefore, I did not know what to prepare nor knew what to expect at the beginning but with planning and teamwork I was grateful to finish all Spanish classes successfully together. A thought that came to me at the beginning was that I was afraid no one would sign up or they won't like the class; but after hearing their feedback I was glad they enjoyed and they were all so involved and participated during class time which was a big encouragement to me. I am also happy to learn that sometimes we need to use different teaching techniques and not just always use power point slides to make class more fun and entertaining like using games, scripts, end others. I am glad to acquire new skill this summer and learn new things about each student and get to know them more. Hope I can continue to learn more and add more experiences like this throughout life!

It could be challenging, however it was more than I had expected. I really treasure the interactions between teachers and children. The teaching style embodies a special combination of artistic technique coupled with the freedom of expression which allows everyone to feel relaxed, at home, and creatively encouraged.
